Blanche Marie Schlehuber

Blanche Marie Schlehuber passed away peacefully and surrounded by family at her home in St Ignace, Michigan, on April 15, 2023. She went to be with her Lord and Savior at the age of 99. Blanche was born in Rudyard, Michigan on October 26, 1923, to Edmond and Alice (Tromblay) Vigneaux. She was the second of six children. She graduated from Rudyard as Valedictorian of her class in 1941. After graduation she worked in Sault Ste Marie, Michigan. She had 2 War-priority jobs: at Michigan Bell Telephone as an operator and then at the Soo Locks from 1943-1945. Blanche married Alfred J. Schlehuber at the Catholic Church in Rudyard on February 10, 1945. They had 9 children. Fred (Judy) Schlehuber, Lorraine (McBaine) Waite, Larry (Linda) Schlehuber, Debbie (John) Garcia, Ann Marie Schlehuber, Brenda (Greg) Mortensen, Brian (Ronda) Schlehuber, Patrick Schlehuber, and Scott (Jenny) Schlehuber. She, and her husband, Al, were very active in Christian ministry. She taught Bible Study at Long Term Care on Thursday mornings for 23 years. She taught religion classes to middle school students for 30 years. She delivered Communion to shut ins in the St Ignace area for years, taking time out of her busy schedule to visit and pray with them. She has worked in jail and prison ministry for over 32 years. She lived a good life and finished well. She cherished any time spent with family and her grandchildren and great grandchildren loved her dearly. Friends and neighborhood children felt welcome and a part of the family. Many still recall coming to her home in Evergreen Shores smelling the aroma of freshly baked bread. Blanche is survived by her 9 children and their spouses; 27 grandchildren, 50 great-grandchildren; and 6 great-great grandchildren. She is also survived by one sister, Marie Marcus Backlund, 3 sisters-in-law, Betty Vigneaux, Mary Lou Shaw, and Gert Sorenson; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband of nearly 50 years, 2 brothers, 2 sisters, a grandson, a great-grandson, and a granddaughter-in-law. Visitation will be held on April 19, 2023, from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM at St. Ignatius Loyola Catholic Church, in St. Ignace with Father Ricca officiating. Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 11:00 AM. Pallbearers are Blanche’s grandsons: Jacob Waite, Josh Mortensen, Chris, Steven, Curtis, Giles, Joe and Sam Schlehuber. Burial will be at Moran Catholic Cemetery at a later date. Galer Dodson Funeral Home of St. Ignace, Michigan, is serving the family.
