Cheryl Ann Becker

Cheryl Ann Becker of St. Ignace, Michigan, died on March 10, 2023, at Mackinac Straits Hospital. She was 75 years old. She was born in Lansing Michigan on April 16, 1947, to Ainsley James and Celena “Midge” Bernadine (Jean) Becker. Cheryl grew up in her hometown of Lansing, where she graduated from Gabriel’s Catholic High School. She later attended Lansing Community College where she earned her associate degree. Following college, she moved to Battle Creek, MI. In 1980, Cheryl went on to work at FedEx where she became the first female driver in the district. It was there that she met her life partner, Mark Anthony Eldridge, and fell in love. The couple moved to St. Ignace, MI. Her favorite place was Mackinac Island, MI. Cheryl shall be remembered as a courageous woman and often went where others dared not go. True to this nature, she paved the way for herself and other women by taking on historically male roles in the work force. There were more than a few instances where she became the ‘first woman’ in her field. She was hardworking, stubborn, and never let the world tell her ‘No’. Cheryl enjoyed researching her family history and the history of the world around her. She especially loved learning about Northern Michigan and the Native American history there. Cheryl was incredibly creative, and demonstrated this through her work as a talented stained-glass artist where she created hanging lamps and other decorative pieces. Cheryl was an idealist and a woman of strong principle who often challenged convention. She never accepted things just as they were, but instead saw them as they could and should be. Cheryl lived each day to its fullest and left many behind who will cherish the time they were able to spend with her. Her free spirit lives on in her loved ones. Cheryl was preceded in death by her parents, and her older sister, Linda M. T. Maurer. She is survived by her life partner, Mark Eldridge of St. Ignace; as well as her nieces and nephews, Kimberly (Rob) Brewer Nawn of Charlotte, NC, Tracy (Adam) Smith of Dewitt, MI, and Lawrence (Cherie) Maurer of DeWitt, MI.
