Frank Phillip Miller

Frank Phillip Miller, age 83 of Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan, passed away Monday morning, September 6, 2010 at War Memorial Hospital. He was born on September 29, 1926 in Toledo, Ohio, the son of the late Frank George and Marion Lucas (Youngs) Miller. Frank graduated from Sault High School with the class of 1944 and later received an Associates Degree in Engineering from Lake Superior College. Between high school and college, Frank served in the United States Navy. For a short time he returned home to work as a logger with his father, but ultimately he returned to the Navy. Frank served his Country nearly 28 years, spanning WW II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War. He also did three tours of duty in Antarctica as a plant operator for the nuclear power plant located there. He last served on the USS Dwight D. Eisenhower, of which he was a plank owner. After retiring from the Navy he went to work for North Anna Nuclear Power Plant in Mineral VA as a Quality Control Officer, he retired from there and went to work for EBASCO as a QC Officer for their Nuclear Power Plants located in the Phillipines, Taiwan, Belgium and Texas. After traveling the world, Frank chose to return to Sault Ste. Marie to spend the rest of his life. Frank was a member of the American Legion Post #3, the VFW Post #3676, the Elks Lodge #552, the DAV, and the Old Antarctica Explorers Club. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, and watching Red Wing hockey and Packer football. Frank is survived by his wife: Sydney (Yarbrough) Miller, whom he married on April 18, 1946 in Salem, Oregon; four children: Frank David Miller of Virginia, Shyla (Joseph, Sr.) Dotson of Sault Ste. Marie, MI, Phillip Fredrick Miller of Sault Ste. Marie, MI, and Catherine (Robert) Dunston of Virginia; seven grandchildren: Christine, David, Ruben, Joseph Jr., Shayla, Nicci, and Bannon; and 8 great grandchildren. He is also survived by a brother: George David (Joyce) Miller of Kentucky; a nephew; and a great nephew. He was preceded in death by his parents; a grandson: Frank Preston Miller; and a great granddaughter: Shyanna Denise Beauchamp. A celebration of Frank's life will be held at a later date.
