Donald T. McMillan

Donald T. McMillan 78 of Cadillac passed away Tuesday afternoon, October 20 at Spectrum Butterworth Hospital in Grand Rapids after suffering a massive stroke while hunting near Cadillac. He was born in Trout Lake on July 11,1937 to Thomas and Clara (Vertz) McMillan. He graduated from Rudyard High School in the class of 1955. He entered the United States Navy in 1956 and spent the next 24 years in service, retiring as a Chief Petty Officer in 1980. He spent several years as a recruiter in the Northern Michigan area. He has lived in Cadillac the past 38 years, but traveled to Trout Lake many times where his roots were. He grew up on his grandmothers farm, near Trout Lake. He loved to hunt and fish, and was bow hunting with his nephews when stricken with his fatal illness ... He loved to garden, and cut wood by the hundreds of cords, and has enough ahead for several years. He was an excellent electrician, and handiman, his family says. He was also an avid Tiger fan, or any baseball on TV. He was a member of AMVETS and American Legion in Cadillac, and a member of Brimley VFW. He was loved by his family, and very close to all his family, He will be sorely missed. He is survived by a son, Joe (Bethmarie) McMillan, Cadillac; daughters, Donna STevens, Lafayette, Louisanna; Rowena (Mike) Goerbig, Cadillac; Brenda (Charlie Eckardt) McMillan, Mesick; 1 brother, Ronald (Joan) McMillan, St.Ignace; sisters, Vivian (Ken) Berkland, Rudyard; Rayetta( John) Chinn, Long Beach, CA; Charlene Welch, Rudyard; 7 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren, and 21 special nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, Virginia in February of 2011 and a sister, Pauline Davis in 2003. Funeral services will be Monday, October 26 at 1 pm at Dodson Funeral Home, 240 McCann Street, St.Ignace with Pastor Dan Knepper officiating. Visitation will be from 11 am until service time at the funeral home. Pallbearers will be 2 nephews and 4 grandsons;; Bruce Davis, Dwayne Davis, Christopher McMillan, Craig Stevens, Ryan Weston and Daniel Weston. Burial will be it Lakeview Cemetery, Trout Lake,Michigan. Memorials may be directed to the American Legion with envelopes available from Dodson Funeral Home.
