Capt.James E. Gamble

Capt. James E. Gamble, 85 of St.Ignace died Wednesday evening October 20, 2010 surrounded by his family at his home on Martin Lake Road. He was born March 15,1925 in St.Ignace to Charles & Charlotte (Davis) Gamble. He served in the U.S.Army from June 2,1943 to March 31,1946.. He was with the Anti Aircraft Artillery Weapons Battalion, and served overseas, in Rhineland & Central Europe. After discharge he returned to Michigan & worked as a lumber jack on land he owned. He was a private pilot, and flew to California in 1948, and worked there 3 years. for the US Navy as a seaman aboard freighters supplying ammunition to servicemen in Vietnam. In 1966 he obtained employment as a tug boat captain, and worked in the Texas City Channel dredging for Gahagan Dredging. He served on several vessels for G & M Boat Co. in the waters of the Gulf of Mexico, 100 miles offshore between Apalachicola, Florida & Brownsville, TX. He also worked for Offshore Logistics under the US Flag & Panama. He sailed the Gulf of Mexico, Alaska, the Carbbean, South America, the North Sea, the Mediterranean and the Middle East..He lived in England, Trinidad, South America & the Carribean while he was Captain on the freighters. He also served off shore supply in the Gulf of Mexico out of Morgan City, Louisianna. He also owned a crew boat out of Galvaston,TX and retired in 1995. When he came back to St.Ignace he owned the St.Ignace Cab several years,and was very active in St.Ignace Lions Club, and volunteered for ccommunity action driving patients to and from Doctors appointments. He was also a member of the VFW Post. In June,1970 he married Janie McGee in Mexico, and she survives.Also 3 sons, Kim (Lori) Gamble, Moran: Jeremy, Gamble,St.Ignace:Charles (Kristen) Gamble, Madison, WI.;daughters, Mary Ramsey, East Tawas; April (Terry) Schmidt,in Moundsville,Alabama; Lucia Weeks, Foley, Alabama;1 sister, Leah Milford, St.Ignace; 16 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren. He was preceeded in death by his parents, and brothers, George & Charles ll, also five children, James Jr., David, Melody Montcalm, Perry, and Paul. Funeral services will be held on Monday, October 25 at 1 pm at Dodson Funeral Home with Pastors Dan Williams & Bob Moody officiating. Visitation will be from 11 to service time on Monday. Burial will be in Lakeside Cemeter. Pall bearers were Jeremy Gamble, Charley Gamble, Terry Schmidt, Joe LaVake, Bill Nye and Leland Ohmer. Condolences may be left at www.dodsonfh.com.
