Gladys Fern Tamlyn

Gladys Fern (Pomeroy) Tamlyn, age 90, of St. Ignace, Michigan, was called home to be with the Lord surrounded by her loved ones on August 3, 2024. She was born on March 4, 1934, in St. Ignace, to Earl and Hazel (Buehlow) Pomeroy. Gladys grew up in Paradise, Michigan, where her family owned and operated a commercial fishing business, also in St. Ignace. She graduated from LaSalle High School, with the Class of 1951. After graduating, she met George John Tamlyn, while he was hand milking a cow at Krastow’s Barn on Portage Road. After George returned from the Korean War, they married on December 11, 1954.As they raised their six children she also worked as a Michigan Bell telephone operator in St. Ignace for numerous years. She continued to work for LaSalle High School as the Superintendent’s secretary for many years. After retiring from the school, she enjoyed many other jobs including, the Michigan State Forestry, Upper and Lower Michigan Census, and as the secretary for the United Methodist Church in St. Ignace. She retired for a second and final time at age 80. Gladys was a devoted Christian and loved God. She lived and breathed the word of the Lord and was often moved to share it with many. She loved people and she loved life. She was a wonderful teacher and mentor to many whom she loved with God’s love. Her biggest asset to give was her heart. She was a member of the Straits Evangelical Free Church in St. Ignace. She was an active volunteer and supporter of 4-H, the Legacy House, and Right to Life, and taught Sunday school for 50 years. When her children were young, she volunteered as the Cub Scout Den Mother, and was a counselor at the Michigamee Church Camp. Gladys was active and enjoyed ice fishing for whitefish on Emerson Bay. Then going home to cook up a wonderful whitefish dinner for friends and family. She loved swimming in Lake Superior, picking blueberries, baking, and if you knew Gladys, you knew her molasses cookies. She loved playing her piano, playing lots of games, and pulling weeds in the garden. She enjoyed embroidery, doing the dishes, and shoveling snow. If you tried to get the shovel out of her hand, she would not give it up. She loved winter and a good snowstorm. Some of her most cherished trips were to Hawaii, Alaska, Idaho, the Holy Land, and lastly, to South Carolina where she met her newest and youngest great granddaughter. Gladys was kind, loving, forgiving, patient, giving, and humble. Gladys is survived by her children, Timothy Tamlyn of Petoskey, Michigan, Thomas (Debra) Tamlyn of St. Ignace, Teddy (Andrea) Tamlyn of St. Ignace, Tammy (Gary) Beacom of Pickford, Michigan, Terry (Lori) Tamlyn of St. Ignace, Georgia (Ken) Johnson of Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan; grandchildren, Traci (Jimmy) Tamlyn, Katie (Cody) Finch, Erin (Seldon) Flesher, Matthew (Stephanie) LaTour, Andy (Krista) Tamlyn, and Stephen (Jill) Koski; great-grandchildren, Shaelynn, Brady, Cooper, Xander, Taliase, Jordy, Sage, Svenson, Stella, Brennan, Ava, and Samual; sisters, Opal Lee of St. Ignace, and Judy Leach of Texas; and many beloved nieces and nephews. Gladys was preceded in death by her husband, George; parents, Earl, and Hazel; sister, Yvonne Belonga, and Lois Lambert; and brother, Ernest Pomeroy. Donations can be made out to the Tamlyn Family. A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, August 17, 2024, from 11:00 AM to 12:00 Noon, with a service at Noon, at Family Life Funeral Homes, 999. S. State St., St. Ignace, MI 49781, with a luncheon afterward and a burial following. Final Resting Place will be at the Lakeside Cemetery in St. Ignace, Michigan.
