Anja Sirk

Anja has been promoted to glory March 4, 2017. Anja choose to come to this country in 1955 when she was 24 years old even though she was very proud of her Finnish heritage. She was proud to become an American citizen and was proud to vote in her first presidential election. She wanted everyone to know that she made a conscious choice to become a citizen but loved her homeland with all her heart. She was a proud member of the Salvation Army Church for over 55 years where she served as a Soldier, Sunday School Teacher, and on the Advisory Board. She worked at the Salvation Army Thrift Store for over 37 years where she worked with and met a lot of friends. Anja enjoyed watching her children and grandchildren play sports. Baseball and hockey were her favorites. She also enjoyed watching Detroit Tigers Baseball, the Detroit Pistons Bad Boys and the Kentucky Derby. Anja was an excellent cook and hosted many meals for her family, friends, and political events. She was an excellent crafter and received the Blue Ribbon for Best of Show with her quilt. Anja had a dear heart and always made the best out of anything or any situation. In 2004, Anja received the State of Michigan Volunteer Service Award for her exceptional accomplishments as an American, continuing commitment to volunteerism, and exemplary efforts to improve the lives of others. Anja's beautiful heart and spirit led her to touch many lives in the community. Her willingness to listen, share, give and teach by example was the epitome of spreading the Gospel to everyone she met. Anja is survived by two children: Mark (Judy) Sirk and Debbie Sirk both of Sault Ste. Marie, MI; two grandchildren: Matthew Sirk and Stephani Leahy; and four great grandchildren: Olivia, Palin, Michael, and Maxwell Leahey. She is also survived by a Goddaughter: Nancy White of North Carolina and a close friend: Don Cooper of Sault Ste. Marie, MI. Anja was preceded in death by her parents: Otto and Lyyti (Oksanen) Lehtinen; and her husband: August Sirk. A celebration of Anja's life will be held at the Salvation Army Church at 132 W. Spruce Street, Sault Ste. Marie, MI 49783 on May 1, 2017, at 11:00 a.m. The services will be conducted by the Major Thomas and Belinda Riggs.
