Audrey Anderson

Audrey Nellie Anderson, age 89, of Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan entered the presence of her Savior on Thursday morning, April 18, 2019, in her room at Freighterview Assisted Living as her family read Psalm 103 and sang a hymn. Audrey was born on October 2, 1929, in Sault Ste. Marie to the late Albert and Nellie (Madlin) Whisenant, the eighth of nine children. A determined child, Audrey walked to church by herself in Algonquin weekly, and at the age of 12, realized she was a sinner and accepted Christ as her personal Savior. During her high school years, she worked at War Memorial Hospital and JC Penney. She graduated from Sault High School in 1947 along with her sweetheart Wilson Anderson whom she married on June 21, 1948, at First Baptist Church (this was his 19th birthday and she had told him she wouldn't marry him until he was 19.) Audrey felt the call of God to be a missionary so she and Wilson attended Northwestern Schools in Minneapolis/St. Paul in the fall of 1949 where they were able to hear the school president, Billy Graham, preach on a regular basis. Health and financial issues precluded them from attending Bible school beyond one year, but Audrey focused on serving her Lord in her home and church. As a member of First Baptist Church and then Calvary Baptist Church, she taught children's classes, sang in the choir, served as a deaconess, and helped on various committees. She was also involved in the schools at both Community Baptist and Calvary Baptist during their years of operation. With a lifelong goal of sharing the Gospel, Audrey was involved with Child Evangelism Fellowship for over 50 years. She was an avid supporter of missionaries in Bolivia, India, Ghana, China, and Haiti, as well as other local and national outreach programs. During her almost 71 years of marriage to Wilson, they co-owned the KarmelKorn/Sweet Soo Bakery for 35 years, managed the Lawson Motel, and worked at Northwoods Christian Camp for 15 years. Audrey is survived by her husband, Wilson; her children Glenn (Phyllis) Anderson of Rockwall, Texas; Janet Fossitt of Sault Ste. Marie; Phyllis (Roger) Avery of Elberton, Georgia; and Ruth( Daniel) Hamel of Sault Ste. Marie. Also, surviving are nine grandchildren: Tsarina (O.W.) Metker, Stacey (Kevin) Benson, Will (Heidi) Leach, Valorie (Carter) Roughton, Sara (Randy) Costellow, Lindsay Avery, Jesse (Beth) Hamel, Jordan (Miranda) Hamel, Rachel (Mark) Wigginton, and twenty great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents and her siblings, Dinah Ferguson, Walter Whisenant, Violet Folks, Albert Whisenant, Nina Whisenant, Roy Whisenant, Edgar Whisenant, and Beatrice Musolf. She was also preceded by her son-in-law Donald Fossitt. A memorial service will be held at 2:30 PM on Friday, July 5, 2019, at Calvary Baptist Church with Pastor Dave Pearce and Pastor Larry Witte officiating. Friends may gather at the church from 1:30 PM until the time of the service. Burial will be at Oaklawn Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be left to Child Evangelism Fellowship of the EUP, P.O. Box 2004, Sault Ste.Marie, Michigan 49783.
