Barney G. Nettleton

Barney George Nettleton, age 86, of Pickford, Michigan was called home to his Lord and Savior Tuesday evening, June 19, 2012 from Mackinac Straits Hospital in St. Ignace, Michigan. Barney was born on August 8, 1925 in Pickford, Michigan at home, the son of the late Samuel and Laura (Blair) Nettleton. He married Marjorie Kamper on October 15, 1947 at her parent's home in a double ceremony with Marjorie's sister, Gertrude marrying Barney's brother, Glenn. Barney grew up on a farm in Pickford. He was the youngest of seven children. When he was growing up he went to school, worked in the woods, and helped around the farm. He went into the Army at the age of 18 and served his country in WWII where he fought in the Battle of Hurtgen Forest. Barney lived in Minnesota for 10 years where he worked for a coffee company. He then moved back to Michigan and worked for Cedarville Quarry until retiring at the age of 62. He then went back to work for the Chippewa County court system as a supervisor of the inmates on work release. He also cut firewood and built a cabin in his 80's with the help of many friends and family. Barney was dedicated to his family and his Church. He loved to help people, and when he could no longer do the things he wanted to do, he had a way of gently persuading others to help. He always had a story to tell or a joke to share like: "Why do golfers wear two pair of pants? In case they get a hole in one." He told this joke for months, until he was finally asked "Do you know what a hole in one is?" He replied, "No", and laughed. He was a member of Northhills Baptist Church, Hessel VFW, American Legion, and the Pickford Lions Club. Barney is survived by 7 children: Loreen (Ron) Case of Bemidji, MN; Rodney (Chris) Nettleton of Holt, MI; Stanley (Joanie) Nettleton of Travlers Rest, SC; Jane Duschen of Lockport, NY; Joyce (Cesar) Hernandez of Stillwater, MN; Samuel (Jan) Nettleton of Dafter, MI; and Russel David Nettleton of Pickford, MI; 12 grandchildren: Brett (Lynn) Case, Chuck Case, Tim (Betsy) Nettleton, Tony (Kayoko) Nettleton, Tabitha (Chuck) Newell, Stanley V. (Ashly) Nettleton, Tina (Jason) Green, Danielle (Dennie) Jarrell, Zoe Hernandez, Sam (Paula) Nettleton, Amanda Nettleton, and Jeremiah Nettleton; 23 great-grandchildren Merceades, Cody and Brittney Case; Corrinne and William Nettleton; Joey Barney, Billy, and Donnie Newell; Johannah and Noah Nettleton, Taylor, James, and Alexis Green; Drake, Darrell, and Dakota Jarrell; Jennie Nettleton, Wade Thibert, Tyler Breeden, and Bradley Lawless; Marcus and Carley Nettleton and Sebastian Patterson; and 2 great-great grandsons: Jake Newell and Levi Parr; brothers-in-law: Art Stejskal, and Virgil Ball; sisters-in-law: Hazel Nettleton, and Margaret Kamper He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife: Marjorie Nettleton; an infant grandson: Lucas Nettleton; brothers: Russell, Harry, and Glenn Nettleton; and sisters: Mary Anderson, Eva Anderson, and Edna Bawks. A funeral service will be held at 3:00 PM on Saturday, June 23, 2012 at C.S. Mulder Funeral Home with Pastor Tim Rader officiating. Friends may call at the funeral home from 1:00 PM until the time of the service. Burial will be at Rockview Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be left to the EUP Special Olympics.
