Charles Nelson Hill Charles Nelson Hill, age 56, of Pickford, Michigan died Monday, January 26, 2009 in a fire at his home. He was born August 20, 1952 at home in Marquette Township in Pickford, the son of Harold Richard and Etta Marie (Wonnacott) Hill. Charles grew up in Pickford, attending Pickford Public Schools, where he stood out in academics and athletics. He was a class officer for two years and lettered in basketball, football, track, baseball, and cross country, most for four years. He was known as a gentle giant who enjoyed having fun with his friends, playing sports or just hanging out. He graduated from Pickford High School in 1970. He earned his Bachelor Degree at Ferris State University and later his Master’s Degree at the University of Michigan. Charles had many interests. He loved riding his motorcycle and traveled around Lake Superior on it as well as to his sister's home in Alabama. Charles also enjoyed more traditional traveling and visited friends and family in Norway, France, Germany, and England. He collected antique toys which he usually purchased at garage sales. He loved listening to music and hunting deer with a muzzle loader. For the last 22 years he has been active in Friends of Bill W. He also attended the North Hills Baptist Church in Hessel. Charles is survived by one daughter, Krystal VerSteg of Tulare, California; three sisters, Carol Pickett of Hoover, Alabama, Nancy (Joe) Cornwell of Pickford, and Paula (Ray) Cox of Bristol, Tennessee; nieces and nephews, Carey Pickett, Kristie (Jason) LaRochelle, Chad (Nicole) Cornwell, Mike (Katrina) Cornwell, Chris (Randa) Cornwell, Joy (Garth) Parish, Leo (Tiffany) Rapson Jr., Isaac (Julie) Rapson, Jennifer (Ken) Stevens, Heather (Mark) Sluder, Sabrina (Justin) Gragg, and Melanie (Braindon) MeGeorge; and many great nieces and nephews. Charles was preceded in death by his parents. Services will be held Saturday, January 31 at Reamer Galer Funeral Home, 24549 S. M-129 in Pickford. A gathering will begin at 4 p.m. with a memorial service to be held at 5 p.m. Internment will be in Rockview Cemetery in Marquette Township, Pickford, Michigan.
