Lila Massey

Lila Massey, 96 of St.Ignace passed away Monday evening, January 10 at Mackinac Straits Hospital Long Term Care Facility surrounded by her family. She was born in Rudyard on May 21,1914. Her parents were Henry and Mary (Hill) Latva. She worked in many places even at a young age for families as a house keeper,then at Miles Cabins in St.Ignace; and was a cook in restaurants, and then working for Long Term Care many years and retired at age 65. She then was a care giver for various families around St.Ignace. She loved cooking and baking for her family on holidays,especially her special bread. She loved playing cards with her friends and traveling with friends and family to Florida many winters.She was a member of Zion Lutheran Church and helped with the many cookie bake sales at the church. She married Herman Massey on June 23,1934, and he died August 24,1977. To this marriage was born 11 children, with 9 living. Jim & Faye Massey, St.Ignace; Donald & Judy Massey, St.Ignace; Edmund & Phyllis Massey, St.Ignace; Carol & Ray Halberg, St.Ignace; Raymond & Rose Massey, St.Ignace;Clayton & Maryann Massey, Saginaw; Katie & Michael Frosland, St.Ignace;; John & Lisa Massey, St.Ignace; Michael Massey, St.Ignace. She was preceeded in death besides her husband, 2 infant daughters;Suzanne and Linda; a grandson, Jeff Massey, and 7 siblings; Elma; Elsie, Bertha, Anita, Eino, Edward and Ted.. She is also survived by 50 plus grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren and 8 great great grandchildren. and a brother, Howard Latva, Escanaba. and many nieces and nephews.. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her, as she had a great love for people and a good sense of humor. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, January 15 at 11 am at Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church with Pastor Jeremy Winter officiating. The family will welcome friends at the church from 10 to 11 am. A lunch will follow in the church hall. Burial will be in Gros Cemetery in the spring next to her sister. .
