Dean Herbert Fhlug

Dean Herbert “Big Dog” Fhlug, age 52, of Pickford Township, Michigan, died November 24, 2016, at his home. He was born April 5, 1964 in Azores, Spain. Dean’s family settled in Gwinn, Michigan, where he lived most of his childhood. He graduated from Gwinn High School where he enjoyed playing football. He continued his education at Northern Michigan University in Marquette where he also played football while earning a Bachelor Degree and participating in ROTC. After college, he entered active service in the United States Army and then served with the U.S. Army Reserves until 2000. In 1992, Dean began working at the Michigan Department of Corrections in Kincheloe, Michigan. Dean was a performance car enthusiast and a Ford Mustang man above all else. He never missed a car show and knew all there was to know about performance cars. He made friends with fellow enthusiasts everywhere. He often said that he worked hard so his cars could have a better life. Dean enjoyed speed! In addition to driving his cars fast, he also raced snowmobiles. Dean also enjoyed collecting guns and was always willing to help others find a specific gun they were seeking. He was an avid and very successful bird hunter. Dean is survived by his wife, Claudia (Randles) Fhlug, whom he married in 1992; daughter, Shelby Fhlug of Sault Ste. Marie; and brother, David Lawrence (Victoria) Fhlug of Kissimmee, Florida. Dean was preceded in death by his parents, Lawrence Walter Fhlug and Maria (Henshak) Fhlug. Visitation will be held Thursday, December 1, from 3:00 P.M. until 5:00 P.M. and Friday, December 2, from 10:00 A.M. until 11:00 A.M. at R. Galer Funeral Home, 24549 S. M-129 in Pickford. Funeral services will be held Friday, December 2, at 11:00 A.M. at R. Galer Funeral Home with Pastor Craig Weihman conducting the service. Burial will be on June 16, 2017 at 1:00 P.M. at Forsyth Township Cemetery in Marquette County, Michigan. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Diabetes Association or to the family for a scholarship to be set up in Dean’s name to help local students interested in automotive related study.
