Dee Forest Schultz

Dee Forest Schultz, age 74, of Pickford, Michigan, died Monday, October 6, 2014 at Ball Hospice House in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan. He was born December 8, 1939 in Charlotte, Michigan to Arthur Duane Schultz and Elaine (Depue) Schultz. Dee grew up near Charlotte in the area known as Chester. For several generations, his family owned the local blacksmith shop where Dee learned to shoe horses. After graduating from high school, Dee served in the United States Navy for four years. Much of his time in the Navy was served on the USS Ticonderoga where he was trained as a machinist. Dee has lived in Pickford since 1971. He worked as a machinist for various manufacturing businesses that were in the area over the years. He also worked at Kincheloe Air Force Base doing snow removal. Dee filled his time on weekends and between jobs with his craft of shoeing horses. His excellent service was always in demand. Dee enjoyed fishing all year round and was very active in the Horse Pulling Community for many years. Often he was seen out mowing grass or blowing snow for people around town who, at the time, were not able to take care of their own yards. He also helped at the athletic fields at the school, handling the little details of keeping everything looking great. Dee was the quiet “helping hand” behind the scenes throughout the community. Dee is survived by his children, John Schultz of Colon, Michigan, Cindy (Mike) Pierce of Battle Creek, Michigan, and Andy (Lisa) Schultz of Belgrade, Montana; and grandchildren, Samantha Schultz, Savannah Schultz, Lindsey Nickleson, and Lauren Nickleson. He is also survived by his siblings, Sam (Jean) Schultz of Ceresco, Michigan, Susie Kiplinger of Charlotte, Doris Schultz of Bellevue, Michigan, and Joe (Janet) Schultz of Charlotte. Dee was preceded in death by his parents and by his brothers, Dade, Doug, and Don Schultz. Services will be held Thursday, October 9 at R. Galer Funeral Home, 24549 S. M-129 in Pickford, Michigan. Visitation will be held from 3:00 P.M. until 5:00 P.M. with the funeral service to follow at 5:00 P.M. Interment will be at a later date. Contributions in memory of Dee may be made to Hospice of the E.U.P. for Ball Hospice House, 308 W. 12th Avenue, Sault Ste. Marie, MI 49783.
