Donald Jahr

Donald Lindsay Jahr, Age 88, passed away peacefully in the early morning hours of Wednesday, October 12, 2022, after a brief stay at Pennington Home in Pickford, MI with his loving family by his side. Don was born on July 15, 1934, in Bay City, MI to the late Walter and Rose (Dutcher) Jahr. He graduated from Unionville High School in 1952. He married his wife of 65 years, Shirley (Miller) Jahr of Honolulu, Hawaii and resided in Wisner, MI for 30 years before moving to the Upper Peninsula where their cabin was. As a young man, Don worked on the family farm until his employment with Matthew and Tietz Co. of Sebewaing, MI as a bulldozer and dragline operator. Shortly after he and his brother-in-law, Tom Fleming worked together siding homes and exteriors, then moved on to form his own business "Don Jahr and Son Contracting" with his son Mike for many years in the remodel and construction trade. In 1992, Don and Shirley moved to Sault Ste. Marie (Sugar Island) and worked for his son-in-law, Bill Montgomery until his retirement. Not one to sit idle, Don loved gardening and enjoyed sharing what he grew with his neighbors. He also enjoyed raising poultry and spending time at his deer camp with his son, Mike and lifelong friend, Gale Prime. The thing that he most cherished was time spent at his home of 30 years (Sugar Island) with his wife, children, and grandchildren just "hanging out" sharing stories and great conversations. Don will be remembered as a loving husband, a genuine friend, a wonderful father that loved his kids dearly, and a proud supporter in any endeavors they took on. Don is survived by his wife: Shirley Jahr; Son: Michael Jahr; daughters: Karen (Bill) Montgomery and Kathy (Tim) Gregg all of Sault Ste. Marie; beloved grandchildren: Nathan (Stephanie) Gregg of Sault Ste. Marie, Canada and Emily Gregg (and her special friend, Christopher Vincent) of Charleston, SC; and he was blessed with 2 beautiful great-grandsons that brought much joy and love to "Papa Don": Gavin and Greyson Gregg. He is also survived by sister-in-law: Flossie Jahr of Bay City, MI; brother-in-law: Donald "Bud" Vader of Akron, MI; and many nieces and nephews. Don was preceded in death by his parents, brothers: Harrison (Marie) Jahr, Ramon Jahr; and a sister: Jennie Vader. The family wishes to express their love and gratitude to the very special people at Pennington Home for the outstanding care and compassion to Don in his last few weeks of life. Also, heartfelt thanks and appreciation to Dr. Thilak Chander for his care and compassion through Don's years. Family will be present to receive visitors at C.S. Mulder Funeral Home, 4951 S. M-129, from 10:00 AM until 12:00 noon on Wednesday, October 19, 2022, with a brief service following. Burial will be at Oaklawn Chapel Gardens, 15264 S. M-129, immediately following the service. Following burial, a luncheon for family and friends will be held at the Sundown Lounge, 18664 S. M-129. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Pennington Home, 665 S. Pleasant Street, Pickford, MI 49774 or Hospice of the EUP, 308 W. 12th Ave, Sault Ste. Marie, MI 49783.
