Dorothy Marie Nye

Dorothy Marie Nye, age 93, of Hessel, Michigan, died Friday, May 3, 2019, in Cedarville, Michigan. She was born June 6, 1925, in London, Ontario, Canada, to Raymond John and Velma Viola (Lewis) St. Onge. Dorothy grew up in the Les Cheneaux area of Michigan and graduated from Cedarville High School. She married William Nye on May 1, 1946, in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan, and they raised their family in Hessel. With her children grown, Dorothy worked as a waitress at the Hilltop Restaurant and as a clerk at the Bon Air Hotel, both in Cedarville. Dorothy was very active in the VFW Auxiliary in Hessel and at the Hessel Presbyterian Church. Dorothy enjoyed fishing, needlework, flowers, canning fruits, vegetables, and fish, and walking outdoors. She loved music and was a great dancer. She was an avid reader and worked many crossword puzzles. Dorothy loved her family and enjoyed every minute she could be with them. She had an infectious laugh that brought joy to those around her. Dorothy is survived by two daughters, Jo Ann (David) Schopp of Gaylord, Michigan, and Lana (Giles) Litzner of Cheboygan, Michigan; one son, Rick (Pat) Nye of Hessel; grandchildren, Marc (Julie) Schopp, Danielle (Brent) Bolin, Tina (Donnie) Solomonson, Billy (Jamie) Nye, and Katy (Jeff) Bailey; and great grandchildren, Ciara Solomonson, Perrin Schopp, Parker Schopp, David Bolin, Deserray Pegg, Scott Nye, and Adison Nye; great great-grandson, Kingston Pegg. She is also survived by a sister, Audrey Howells of Highland, Michigan; brother, Gary (Sally) St. Onge of Hastings, Michigan; sisters-in-law, Sadie Nye of Cedarville and Pat St. Onge of Toledo, Ohio; and brother-in-law, Jack Nordquist of Cedarville. Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband, Hans Charles “William” Nye; brothers, Robert St. Onge, Raymond St. Onge, and William St. Onge; and sister, Leona Nordquist. Visitation will be held on Saturday, May 25, 2019 from 10:30 A.M. to 11:30 A.M. at R. Galer Funeral Home in Pickford, Michigan. The funeral service will begin at 11:30 A.M.
