E. Marjorie Byers

E. Marjorie Byers, 94, of Traverse City, formerly of Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan, died on Wednesday, August 9, 2006 at Munson Hospice House in Traverse City. Marjorie was born on March 29, 1912 to Wesley and Ethel (Stanaway)Smart. On June 15, 1934, in Sault Ste. Marie, she married Fred R. Byers, who preceded her in death in 1976. Marjorie was a member of Traverse Bay United Methodist Church in Traverse City and a former member of Central United Methodist Church in Sault Ste. Marie. She was active in United Methodist Women and Church Women United in both churches. She was also a member of the Association of Retired School Personnel. After receiving her teaching certificate from Chippewa County Normal, Marjorie taught at Rosedale, Bruce Township, and Soo Township schools. She went on to receive a bachelor's degree in education from Northern Michigan University in 1968. Marjorie's parents provided her with the opportunity to develop her love of music. Her life long devotion to music expressed itself in both piano and organ. She is survived by a daughter, Helen Marie Chadwick of Traverse City; grandchildren, Holly of Grand Rapids and Andy (Erica) of Traverse City; and a great-grandson, Ethan Charles Chadwick. Marjorie is also survived by four siblings, Eleanor (and the late Percy) Sheppard, Hubert (and the late Alfreda) Smart, Donald (Fay) Smart, all of Sault Ste. Marie; Stanley (Jan) Smart of Grand Haven; and many nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband, Marjorie was predeceased by her son-in-law, Chuck Chadwick, her parents and a daughter at birth. A visitation will take place at Central United Methodist Church, 111 E. Spruce St., Sault Ste. Marie, MI beginning at 9:30 a.m. Monday, August 14. Funeral services will follow at 10:30 a.m. with the Rev. Steven A. Miller officiating. Entombment will follow at Oaklawn Chapel Gardens. Her nephews will serve as pallbearers. A celebration of Marjorie's life will take place in Traverse City at the end of August at the Traverse Bay United Methodist Church. Time and date will be announced later.
