Ernest "Pep" Carl Bruning

Ernest “Pep” Carl Bruning, age 88, of Cedarville, Michigan, passed away on Monday, August 21, 2023, at the Ball Hospice House in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan. He was born on January 17,1935, in Rogers City, Michigan, to Ernest E. and Loretta A. (Wirgau) Bruning. Ernest grew up on the family farm with eight other siblings and graduated from Rogers City Area High School in 1954. Ernest was drafted into the United States Army in 1955 and honorably discharged from the reserves in 1963. He lived in Cedarville where the family had moved and followed his father’s footsteps working at the Limestone Quarry. He met his wife, Charlotte Fountain, and they married on September 17, 1966. He retired from the quarry in 1997 after 42 ½ years. He was a very talented wood worker. He built their home in Cedarville and remodeled their waterfront cabin in Canada. He made everything for his children and grandchildren, from dollhouses, changing tables, toy boxes, rocking horses, and helping with building houses, decks, and anything else that needed to be done for the family. He was a very hard working and simple man who always took care of his family. Life was filled with many camping trips, family Sunday dinners, and enjoying cribbage, word search books, and westerns. He loved the outdoors, hunting, and helping Charlotte in her garden. Ernest was a member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Sault Ste. Marie and served as the treasurer for many years for Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Cedarville. He was a volunteer fireman for Clark Township for over fifteen years and was also on a few bowling leagues for years. Ernest is survived by his son, Drew (Holly) Bruning of Pickford, Michigan; daughter, Luella "Elli '' (Fred) DeVuono of Sault Ste. Marie; grandchildren, Dakota (Amanda) Swinton, Austin (Samantha Giordano) Bruning, Shelby (Colton Evertsen) Lasley, Zachery Lasley and Saige Bruning; great-grandchildren, Carson, Jaxson, and Taylor Bruning, Eli and Jasmin Swinton, and two more great-grandchildren on the way; sister-in-law Kathy Fountain, and many nieces and nephews who will miss him greatly. Ernest was preceded in death by his wife, Charlotte; son, Dean Bruning; parents; mother and father-in-law, Raymond and Della Fountain; brother-in-law, Richard Fountain Sr.; brothers; Arlo “Sam”, Arnold, Mick, and Ronald; sisters, Judy Wrigglesworth, Elaine Grulke, Betty Cole, Nancy Bennett and spouses. A Graveside Service will be held on Sunday, August 27th at 6:00 P.M. at the Fairview Cemetery in Pickford, Michigan.
