Freda Pearl Opolka

Freda Pearl Opolka, age 88, of Goetzville, Michigan, died Sunday, January 15, 2017, in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan. She was born January 30, 1928, in DeTour Village, Michigan, to Frederick James and Pearl (McLeod) Stevenson. Freda grew up in DeTour and attended DeTour Schools where she graduated with perfect attendance and valedictorian of her class. She met John Peter Opolka at bingo and they married on April 24, 1947 in Goetzville, Michigan. They started their family after moving to Goetzville and raised three children. Freda worked as township clerk for 32 years and as St. Stanislaus Kostka Catholic Church organist for 40 years. Freda was a member of St. Stanislaus Kostka Catholic Church, Raber Amvets Auxiliary, and a lifetime member of St. Stanislaus Kostka Alter Society. Freda enjoyed playing bingo, going to the casino, and watching Detroit Tigers Baseball. As a young adult, she liked ice fishing with her friends. She loved quilting and left several for her family to finish. Freda is survived by two daughters, Marilynn Opolka of Goetzville, and Glenda (Jay Fehner) Opolka of Raber, Michigan; one son, Jack (Nancy) Opolka of Goetzville; grandchildren, David (Leslie) Opolka, Jonathon (Sheila) Crawford, and Michael (Ludi) Crawford; great-grandchildren, Kaalin and Lucas Crawford, Taylor and Joseph Opolka; sister, Martha King of DeTour; sisters-in-law, Coleen Stevenson of Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan, Theadorsa Opolka of Sault Ste. Marie, and Rosemary Opalka of Goetzville; brother-in-law, Jim LaLonde of Oregon; and many nieces and nephews. Freda was preceded in death by husband, John Opolka; granddaughter, Leslie Opolka; sisters, Mary Plont, Irene LaLonde, Catherine Stevenson; brother, William “Billy Jack” Stevenson; and brother-in-law, Lou King; and niece, Penni Dumback. Visitation will be held on Thursday, January 19, 2017 from 4:00 P.M. to 6:00 P.M. at R. Galer Funeral Home, 24549 South M-129, in Pickford, Michigan. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, January 20, 2017, at 12:00 Noon at St. Stanislaus Kostka Catholic Church, 12841 E. Traynor Road, in Goetzville. Interment will be at St. Stanislaus Cemetery in the spring of 2017
