George "Tony" Lewis, Sr.

George A. "Tony" Lewis, Sr., age 77, of Sault Ste. Marie and Rose City, Michigan passed away early Thursday morning, April 29, 2010 at his home, surrounded by his family and loved ones. He was born in Pontiac, Michigan on March 7, 1933 to the late Elmer and Edith (Matteson) Lewis. Tony attended Pontiac Central High School in Pontiac, MI, later he served his country in the United States Navy. He was a proud member of the Sault Tribe of Chippewa Indians. He loved being in the woods; hunting, fishing and camping and teaching his family to carry on these traditions. Tony is survived by his wife: Joy Ann (Allard) Lewis whom he married on May 11, 1962 at St. Vincent DePauls Catholic Church in Pontiac, MI,; eight children: Laura (Todd) Williams of Kincheloe, MI, Tony Thompson of Kincheloe, MI, Winonah (David) Scruggs of Arizona , Chris (Christine) Lewis of Sault Ste. Marie, MI, Rochelle (Shawn) Coak of Kincheloe, MI, Joy VanWormer of Sault Ste. Marie, MI, Kevin (Jennifer) Lewis of Whitemore, MI, and George Lewis, Jr. of Sault Ste. Marie, MI; 32 grandchildren: Chris, Atisha, Alex, Leah, Brooke, Makisha, Deidra, Rachel, Anthony, Tim, Samantha, Nicole, Chenoa, Kevin, Ashley, Sierra, Brandon, Sara, Jeffrey, Michael, Austin, Cheyenne, Chantel, David, George, Audrey. Shane, T.J, Kate, Evangelina, Billy and Devin; 27 great grandchildren; a sister: May Machin of Ortonville, MI and a brother: Charles (Linda) Lewis of Dexter, MO. One Uncle Victor Matteson of Pontiac, Michigan. Tony is also survived by many brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews whom he loved dearly. Tony was preceded in death by his parents: Elmer Lewis and Edith Hansen, a daughter: Anna Maria Lewis; a sister: Beverly Davis and a grandson Kelly Williams. Visitation will be held at the Niigaanagiizhik Building beginning Friday afternoon, April 30, 2010 and continuing until the time of the service. Traditional funeral services will be held at 10:00 AM on Monday, May 3, 2010 at the Niigaanagiizhik Building with Brother John Hascall officiating. Burial will be at Maple Ridge Cemetery on Sugar Island. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be left to help with funeral expenses.
