Gertrude Gilroy

Gertrude June (Brown) Gilroy, age 89, of Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan and more recently, Freighter View Assisted Living, passed away peacefully on April 16, 2018, with her brother Charlie and sister-in-law Cathy beside her. Gert was born and raised on Brown's dairy farm. She graduated from Sault High in 1947. In June 1948, she married the love of her life, Earl Gilroy at St. James Episcopal Church. They had 62 wonderful years together. They had no children but were godparents to their best friends, Cal and Jen Morrison's children: Kim, Kris, Kelly, and Kirk Morrison. They loved them as their own. Gert's career spanned 36 years as a secretary for manufacturing industries in the Detroit area. She retired in 1992. She was very active at St John's Episcopal Church in Westland. She loved to bowl, do ceramics, garden, and most of all, spend time with loved ones. Gert moved back to the Soo in 2012 after losing her husband in 2010. Anyone who met her loved her. The family would like to thank from the bottom of our hearts, Dr. Tim O'Connor, Freighter View Assisted Living, and Hospice of the EUP, for their kind and caring attention. Special thanks goes out to Saundra, Chris, Rhonda, Dan, Roxanne, Sue, Elsie, Ann, Casey, Lori, Pam, Tanja, Wanita, Michelle, Kim, Izzy, Rachael, Debbie, Suzanne, Staff in the Kitchen, Donna, and all who came to visit with her. Gert's family includes brother: Russell Brown (Deceased); sister-in-law: Jean Byers of Grand Ledge, MI, and niece: Linda Brown Heffron of Eagle, MI, a nephew: Doug Brown of Grand Ledge, MI, and two great-nieces: Lauren Brown Snyder of Lansing MI and Lindsay Brown Smith of Grand Rapids, MI. Another brother: Charlie (Cathy) Brown of Rudyard, MI, nephew: Tony Brown of Toronto, Ontario, Niece: Aimee (Mike Freeman) Brown of West Bloomfield, MI, great-nephew: Charlie Freeman of West Bloomfield, MI; and two great-nieces: Madeline Freeman and Elizabeth Freeman both of West Bloomfield, MI, Additional nieces: Anita Johnson of Canton, MI, Valerie Jarrett of Canton, Gerri Belisle of Westland, MI, and Connie Strunk of Jackson, MI; and nephews: Leroy Gilroy of McPherson, KS, Darwin Aho of Wasilla, AK, and Larry Walker of Indiana. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, May 5, 2018, at C.S. Mulder Funeral Home. Friends may call at the funeral home from 10:00 AM until the time of the service. Burial will be at Oaklawn Chapel Gardens. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Gert's name to Hospice of the EUP.
