Gordon Bennett Reid

Gordon Bennett Reid, age 94, of Dafter, Michigan died Saturday, August 2, 2008 at Tendercare in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan. He was born July 24, 1914 in Dafter to Arthur Gordon and Fern (Kelly) Reid. Gordon lived most of his life in Dafter where he was a farmer and also owned and operated Lake Superior Beef Company. He supported the 4-H program and was a 4-H livestock buyer. After he retired, he spent winters in Arizona. Gordon was a member of the Faith Baptist Church in Dafter and the Moose Lodge in Sault Ste. Marie. He was a 60 year member of the Bethel Masonic Lodge #358 and a 32nd Degree Scottish Rite Mason, and he belonged to the Ahmed Shriners of Marquette, Michigan. Gordon loved to dance, especially square dancing. He also called square dances and had a collection of fiddles. Gordon enjoyed traveling and went to Australia and Alaska, among other places. Gordon is survived by his wife of 12 years, Marjorie and four sons, Edward (Brenda Benton) Reid of Lansing, Michigan, Arthur (Dorla) Reid of Dafter, Gene (Ruth Anne) Reid of Fenton, Michigan, and Karl (Phyllis) Reid of North Pole, Alaska. He is also survived by twelve grandchildren, Ed's children, Marsha (Jerry) Van Sloten of Rudyard, Michigan, Cleve (Jeannie) Reid of Sault Ste. Marie, Leah Reid of Lansing and Carli Reid of Lansing; Art's children, Arthur B. (Kristin) Reid of Sandpoint, Idaho, Jennifer Reid (husband, Matt Strong) of Knab, Utah, and Crystal (Mark) Blackwood of Rudyard; Gene's children, Suni Reid of Burton, Michigan, Sherie Reid of Welch, West Virginia, and Gary (Shanna) Reid of Burton; and Karl's children, Nick Reid of North Pole and Cory Reid of North Pole; and ten great grandchildren, Kevin and Lindsey Van Sloten, Josh and Allison Reid, Kenny and Rebecca Reid, Aurora and Max Blackwood, Destiny Reid and Jack Flowers. Gordon is also survived by one sister, Fern Reid Millar of Lake, Orion, Michigan; two sisters-in-law, Elsie Newton of Traverse City, Michigan, and Ruth Cope, of Clarkston, Michigan; nieces and nephews, Wayne (Jane) Smith, Marjean (Dean) Roe, Kevin (Lori) Smith, Carol Powell, Kay (Bill) Kernick, Bruce (Dana) Millar, Linda (Rich) Pawlowski, and Art (Carolyn) Atkinson. Gordon is further survived by step-children, Dr. John (Grace) Glick of Finland, Minnesota, Lynn (Steve) Wolden of Redlands, California, and Laurel (Rod) Stenke of Mt. Lake, Minnesota. Gordon was preceded in death by his first wife, Martha Pfeifer Reid in 1982; two sisters and their husbands, Martha and John Smith, and Doris and Charlie Atkinson; brother-in-law, William Millar; and nephews, Gary Smith and Jimmy Atkinson. Visitation will be held Wednesday, August 6 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. with a Masonic Memorial Service at 8:00 p.m. at Reamer Galer Funeral Home in Pickford, Michigan. There will also be visitation on Thursday, August 7 from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at Reamer Galer Funeral Home. Gordon's funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, August 7 at Reamer Galer Funeral Home with Reverend Ray Wolfe conducting the service.
