Ivan Glen Hartman

Ivan Glen Hartman, 54, of Sault Ste. Marie, MI passed away on June 16, 2014 at Northern Michigan Hospital in Petoskey after a four-month battle with Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML) surrounded by his family. He is survived by his wife, Kristen, and his three sons: Devin, 20, Cole, 18 and Grady, 5. He is also survived by his siblings - his older brother, Quentin [Brenda] Hartman, and sisters, Carolyn [Richard] Maron, Kathryn [Terry] Stoppa, and Gwen Gerlofs – and his in-laws, Ben and Sharon Jones. In addition, survivors include Kristen’s siblings – Steven [Debbie], Michael [Leann], and Kelly [Derek] Harned – and many nieces and nephews. He was born in Alpena, MI to the late Ervin and Betty Hartman. Growing up, Ivan developed a love for hunting that he carried with him into adulthood. One of his greatest pleasures in life was going out to the hunting cabin to bring home a turkey or deer. His joy was only increased by the fact that he was able to pass his knowledge on to his sons. Ivan was a patrolman for the City of Sault Ste. Marie Police Department for 25 years, where he was known as “Bubba”. He began his career as a police officer in Havre, Montana in 1980. Although Ivan achieved many accomplishments in his 31 years of police service, he would say his most significant was being a father to his three boys. Devin, Cole and Grady were the light of Ivan’s life. There was nothing he enjoyed more than cheering on his sons in basketball, baseball and track. If you were there, you would hear Ivan’s booming voice from the bleachers yelling “Hartman! Hartman!” As Grady says, “He was the best dad ever.” Ivan met his wife, Kristen, in 2003 and they married two years later in 2005. Together they enjoyed camping, cheering on the Detroit Tigers and growing a plentiful garden that produced the best tomatoes. Kristen will have “Ivan’s Canned tomatoes” for quite awhile, and she will continue the tradition with their son, Grady, as she promised. Ivan had a talent for cooking that he learned from his mom, Betty. His favorite thing to do was make his “mother’s recipes,” because she always made the best food. His family and friends will miss his enthusiasm for preparing family meals, as Ivan always prepared a feast. There will be a visitation on Friday, June 20th from 4-8 PM at Clark Bailey Newhouse Funeral Home. Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10:00am at St. Joseph Catholic Church on Saturday, June 21 with Brother John Hascall as Celebrant and Deacon Bill Piche assisting. The committal service will also be Saturday in Alpena at Evergreen Cemetery at 5:00 PM. Memorial donations may be made to an educational fund for the Hartman boys at Old Mission Bank.
