Judith Anne Bynoe

Judith Anne Bynoe, 78, of Mackinac Island, passed away Monday, October 7, 2019, on Mackinac Island. She was born December 22, 1940, to Charles and Sally Dufina on Mackinac Island. She attended Thomas W. Ferry School on Mackinac Island through eighth grade. She attended high school at Marywood School on the Ridge in Evanston, Illinois, where she was graduated in the top 10 of her class in 1958. She was a member of the National Honor Society. She attended St. Mary of the Woods in Indiana from 1959 to 1960. Mrs. Bynoe was graduated from Harper Hospital School of Nursing in Detroit in 1963. She married Robert H. Bynoe, Sr. September 28, 1963, at Ste. Anne's Catholic Church on Mackinac Island. Mrs. Bynoe's first job was at Children's Hospital of Michigan. She worked at Southwest Regional Hospital in Fort Myers, Florida, for many winters. She also worked at the Mackinac Island Medical Center as a registered nurse and on-call nurse at one time. Mrs. Bynoe and her husband bought Betty's Gifts on Mackinac Island from her mother, Sally Dufina, and her two partners, in 1969. She had been a part of the Mackinac Island business community for the last 50 years. For 34 years, Mr. and Mrs. Bynoe, along with their children, spent winters in Fort Myers Beach, Florida. They also owned and operated retail stores during the winter months. They were members of Church of Ascension at Fort Myers Beach, where she also taught catechism for many years. They were avid boaters and enjoyed many Sundays with family and friends on the boat. Mrs. Bynoe was an elder with the Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians. She was a member of Ste. Anne's Catholic Church on Mackinac Island, where she made all her sacraments. She served as the sacristan for more than 20 years at Ste. Anne's Catholic Church, and she also served on the parish council. On September 23, 2011, Mrs. Bynoe was awarded the Catholic Service Award from Bishop Alexander Sample at Ste. Anne's Catholic Church. She is survived by two daughters and their families, Patty Schoenborn and Peggy and Jeff Naber; a son, Jamie Bynoe; seven grandchildren, Riley McKay, Kaitlyn McKay, Dawson McKay, McKenna McKay, Lily Schoenborn, Nicholas Naber, and Olivia Naber, and three sisters-in-law, Mary (nee McCourt) Dufina, Dorothy (nee Bynoe) Diaz, and Mary Anne (nee Bynoe) Tirrell. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Bynoe was preceded in death by her husband, Robert; a son, Robert H. Bynoe II; a daughter, Katherine Mary McKay, and a brother, Ron Dufina. Mass of Christian Burial will be Thursday, October 17, at 11 a.m. at Ste. Anne's Catholic Church on Mackinac Island with Father Jim Williams and Father Peter Fosu officiating. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to time of the service at the church. Burial will follow at Ste. Anne's Cemetery, followed by a luncheon in the church basement. Memorial contributions may be directed to First National Bank of St. Ignace for a special savings account for Jamie Bynoe, Mackinac Island Community Foundation for arts programs, or Ste. Anne's Catholic Church. Dodson Funeral Home of St. Ignace is assisting the family with arrangements.
