Kent Hamel

Chester Kent Hamel, age 88, of Cedarville and Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan went home to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ early Monday morning, April 27, 2015, from his home. Kent was born in Cedarville, Michigan on August 8, 1926, the son of the late Guy and Nellie (Erskine) Hamel. He graduated from Cedarville High School with the class of 1944. Upon graduation, he joined the United States Navy to serve the country he loved. He served on board the USS Proserpine. The primary mission of he and his shipmates, was to repair landing craft for the invasion of Japan. Kent worked for over 30 years as a teller at the 1st National Bank of St. Ignace. He was a member of the Les Cheneaux Historical Association and served as a crew member for the Antique Boat Show, missing only one show since its inception. Kent was also a board member of the St Ignace Hospital, the Sault Tribe of Chippewa Indians, and a member of the Cedarville Volunteer Fire Department. He enjoyed hosting international students from Cedar Campus during the holidays, singing in the choir of First Union Church in Cedarville, being active in various roles within Child Evangelism Fellowship for over 40 years, and serving the Lord in many ways at Lighthouse Baptist Church in Hessel. Kent is survived by his wife: Beth (Mitchell) Hamel, whom he married on August 22, 1959 at First Baptist Church of Sault Ste. Marie; two sons: David (Deborah) Hamel of Forest, VA, and Daniel (Ruth) Hamel of Sault Ste. Marie, MI; five grandchildren: Courtney Hamel, Chad Hamel, Jesse (Beth) Hamel, Jordan Hamel (Miranda Du, fiancée), and Rachel Hamel; and two great grandchildren: Kaitlyn and Brenden Hamel. He is also survived by a brother: Roger (Blanche) Hamel of Cedarville, MI; a sister: Jessie Quincy of Spokane, WA; and a sister-in-law: Judy Hamel of Cedarville, MI. Kent was preceded in death by his parents, a sister: Hope Hill; and a brother: Arnie Hamel. A funeral service will be held at 4:00 PM on Saturday, May 2, 2015 at C.S. Mulder Funeral Home with Pastor Bob Shaw officiating. Friends may call at the funeral home from 2:00 PM until the time of the service. Burial will be at Donaldson Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be left to Child Evangelism Fellowship.
