Laura Ann Melvin

Laura Ann Melvin, age 55, of Drummond Island, Michigan, died April 26, 2019, at home on Drummond Island, with her husband by her side. She was born on February 4, 1964, in Ann Arbor, Michigan, to Robert L. Britton and Judy A. (Immel) Britton. Laura moved to Colorado with her family then California, because her dad was in the military. She later moved to Drummond Island and graduated from DeTour High School. She attended Northern Michigan University in Marquette, Michigan, where she earned her Associate’s Degree in Food Service. She moved to Arizona for about a year, but missed the Michigan weather so much that she moved back to Drummond Island in late 1984. On November 3, 1990, she married Dean Alan Melvin, on Drummond Island at the Lutheran Church. Laura worked for Domino’s Pizza Corporation for 14 years, was the Drummond Island Elementary “Lunch Lady” for about 15 years where she enjoyed being around the children, (it kept her young) and at the D.I. Tee Pee in the summer. Laura enjoyed volunteering for everything. She was active at the D.I. Lutheran Church, and was a volunteer driver for the Drummond Island ambulance. She was named employee of the year a couple of times by the school. She supported Breast Cancer Research and was part of the Teachers Union Support Staff. Laura enjoyed fishing, feeding birds, gardening, animals of all kinds, and she loved helping children and had influenced many. Laura is survived by her husband, Dean Melvin; daughter, Sara Renee Melvin of Drummond Island; son, John “JD” Devin Melvin of Marquette; brother-in-law; Thomas Dyal and Dale (Kelly) Melvin both Drummond Island; sister, Noel (Alex Luousley) Britton of California; and several nieces and nephews. Laura was preceded in death by her father, Robert L. Britton; mother, Judy A. Melvin; stepfather, John K. Melvin; sister, Lynn Dyal; brother-in-law, Kenneth Melvin and Jay Melvin. Memorial gathering will be held on May 9, 2019 from 10:00 A.M to 11:00 A.M. at the Drummond Island Township Hall with a Memorial Service to follow at 11:00 A.M. Burial will be at the Drummond Island Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Hospice of the EUP, 308 W. 12th Ave, Sault Ste.
