Lester W. Spencer

Lester W. Spencer of Sault Ste. Marie, MI passed away in his sleep from cancer Monday 20th February 2017 at the Hospice House of Sault Ste. Marie, MI. Les was born on the 21st May 1934 in Mt. Clemens, MI to Lester William Spencer and Elizabeth Henry. He graduated from Berkley High school in 1952. After graduation he enlisted into the U.S. Navy for 4 years. Lester married Eva Bowman on the 18th May 1953. In 1956 he then transferred to the U.S. Air Force where he retired after 22 years of service as a First Senior Master Sargent. Upon retirement from military service Les attended Lake Superior State University graduating with a Bachelor of Science degree in Electronic Engineering Technology in May 1977. He also attended Northern Michigan University and graduated in the summer of 1980 with a Master’s Degree in Education. Les taught Electronic Engineering Technology at Lake Superior State University from the fall of 1976 until December 1996 where he retired for a second time. Les married his current wife Sarah Gillies on 4th September 1994. He and Sarah enjoyed traveling, camping and purchasing homes that they could improve or remodel. They have lived in Brimley MI, Lillian AL, Rudyard MI, and Sault Ste. Marie MI, over the past 22 years. Lester is preceded in death by his father Lester William Spencer, stepmother Claire Spencer, mother Elizabeth Reddie, stepfather William Reddie, stepbrothers Craig & Robert Reddie and brother Rick Reddie. Beloved brother of James (Deanna) Spencer of Alpena MI and James John (Kelly) Reddie of Alpena MI. Beloved Father to Larry (Patti) Spencer of Sault Ste. Marie, MI, David Spencer of Ellsworth MI, Stepfather to Rachael (Mike) Fuerer of Kinross MI and Richard (Becky) Cole of Ann Arbor MI. Grandfather to Jessica (John) Downs of Oakridge OR, U.S. Army Sargent Kenneth (Melinda) Spencer of Oahu HI, Brandy Edge of Canada, Chenoa Locke of Kincheloe MI, Katia (Ryan) Hughes of Brimley MI and Isabella & Benjamin Cole of Ann Abor MI. Great grandfather to William, Cynthia, Riley, Jelena and Evelynn. In lieu of a funeral there will be a Memorial pot luck picnic on the 10th June 2017 at the Rudyard Township Hall at 11:30am, please bring a dish to pass. The Eulogy will be given by Chris Gillies.
