Doris J. Winkelman

Doris "Doree" Winkelman, 93 longtime local resident of St.Ignace died at Evergreen Living Center early Sunday morning, April 15 following a lingering illness. Doree was born in Park Falls ,Wisconsin on June 9,1918 to Abraham and Rose (Rabbinwich) Steinberg. She graduated from Park Falls High School and attended Stout College in Milwaukee. She worked in Chicago, and met Marvin Winkelman of St.Ignace and they were married in Chicago on September 29,1944 while he was still in the U.S. Army. They made their home in St.Ignace since 1945, where the family owned the Winkelman\'s Store on State Street from 1944 to 1980, when theiir son bought the business. Doree was well known for her cooking and baking skills. She was written up in the St.Ignace News about her recipes. She was well known for her homemade butterscotch and cinnamon rolls, and often organizations called her for donations before they were out of the oven. She and Marv were "famous" for their sauerkraut making parties in the fall, and distributed jars of sauerkraut at Christmas time. They also enjoyed large election parties every four years.She thoroughly enjoyed gardening, planting, pruning and pickiing raspberries from the backyard garden and well as picking flowers for her home. She was a true homemaker, and a life member of Order of Eartern Stars; Hospital Auxillary, former Civic League, and loved her Bridge Club every week. She is a member of B\'Nae Israel Temple in Petoskey.Her husband, Marvin died on November 21,2010. She is survived by her family, son Rob Winkelman, St.Ignace; daughters, Virginia "Ginny" and James R. Michalowski, of Gaithersburg,MD.; Margaret "Peggy" Winkelman, Annapolis, MD., a sister, Lois Klein in Chicago; 5 grandchildren; Brian and Kate; Tanya and Terry; Scott and Lisa; Andy and Emily, and Mamie; and 6 great grandchildren, Alex, Elizabeth, Lauren, Kyle, Lillie, and August. She was preceeded in death besides her husband , a brother, David Steinberg and his wife Ann. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, April 21 at 3 pm at Dodson Funeral Home with Fr. Jim Williams officiating. Visitation will be from 1 pm to service time at the funeral home Burial will be in Lakeside Cemetery with her husband, and the American Legion will provide military rites for Marvin. Memorials may be directed to the Mackinac Straits Health System with envelopes available from Dodson Funeral Home who assisted the family with arrangements..
