Loren Allen Johnson

Loren Allen Johnson, age 81, of Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan passed away at War Memorial Hospital on Tuesday November 1, 2016 surrounded by his family. Loren was born in Daggett, Michigan on December 1, 1934 to William and Bertha (Hanson) Johnson. The youngest of three children, Loren was raised on his family’s farm. He was active in several sports including baseball, track, football and basketball. He graduated from Stephenson High School in 1952. Loren joined the United States Army and served his country from 1956 to 1958. After an honorable discharge, Loren relocated to Kincheloe, Michigan where he managed the Base Exchange at Kincheloe Air Force Base. Loren later managed U.P. Office Supply in Sault Ste. Marie for several years. In 1998, Loren retired from the State of Michigan, Department of Corrections where he was employed as a Store Keeper. Loren was an active community member in the Sault area. He coached his sons' Little League Baseball teams for several years. Loren bowled with several men’s leagues in the past. He enjoyed playing golf every summer. Loren loved watching sports of all kinds, but particularly enjoyed cheering on the Green Bay Packers, Detroit Tigers, Detroit Red Wings, U of M football, and most of all his beloved LSSU Laker Hockey team. He was an avid member of the Soo Blue Liners and BPOE Elks. Loren was proud of his Knights of Columbus membership and praised the pasties he often helped prepare. Loren also enjoyed making meatballs at the Christopher Columbus Hall. Loren was a man of great faith and was an active member of the St. Mary’s Pro Cathedral where he volunteered as an usher for many years. Loren was especially proud of his children and grandchildren. Loren was quick to share a story or pull a picture of family from his wallet to share with all. Loren is survived by his sons, Robert (Renee) Johnson of Brimley, Michigan and Gregory (Mary) Johnson of Holland, Michigan. He is further survived by his grandchildren Paige, Garrett, Ashley, Teagan and Darren. Also surviving Loren are his siblings, William Johnson Jr. of Stephenson, MI and Jeanine Barrington of Fair Oaks, California. Visitation will be held from 5:00pm until 7:00pm on Friday, November 4, 2016 at Clark Bailey Newhouse Funeral Home with a prayer service at 6:30 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, November 5, 2016 at St. Mary’s Pro Cathedral Church in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan, with Father Sebastian Kavumkal as Celebrant and Deacon Bill Piche assisting. Burial will be at Oaklawn Chapel Gardens. Online Condolences may be left at www.clarkbaileynewhouse.com.
