Robert Toivo Lampi

Robert Toivo Lampi, 78 of Mack inaw City passed away early Thursday morning, March 7 at Evergreen Living Center in St.Ignace. He was born December 13,1934 in Negaunee. His parents were Toivo and Johanna (Hill) Lampi, of Finnish decent he was very proud of. He graduated from Negaunee High School in 1954 and Northern Michigan University in Marquette with a Bachelor of Science in 1959. He taught ,Shop ,Mathmatics and Drafting in High School, most of his time in Mackinaw City. He also taught in Ravenna,Michigan, and he retired on June 18,1994 from Mackinaw City School System.. He married Kathleen Maki on August 12,1961 in Negaunee at Immanual Lutheran Church and she died September 7,1994.in Mackinaw City. He married Susanne Thompson on May 10,2005 at St.Anthony Catholic Church in Mackinaw City. He loved his substitute teaching in Mackinaw after retirement, and subbed on Friday before his fall on February 5,2012 .. He loved showing his Sauna that he and friends built some years ago. He was proud of the family geneology books that his first wife,Kathy started, and he finished them in 2012. He stated he was cousins to half the people in Negaunee and kept in touch with many. He spent many hours in his garden and taking care of flowers, something else he was very proud of. He also loved his dogs.He will be missed by the many who knew him, and was loved by the hundreds of students he taught. He kept his fathers middle name on his signature forever, as that represented the Finnish lineage. He served in the U.S. Army .from September 2,1959 to June 5,1961. He is survived by his wife Susanne; his 3 daughters and familiies;, Becky and Robert Fox, Negaunee; Candace Lampi and her fiance Michael McGee, Santa Barbara, California; and Jill and Aaron Rogers, Bloomingtom, Indiana; and 3 children he inherited from his second marriage; Timothy and Catherine, Thompson; Royal Oak; Amy Thompson of Mackinaw City; and John Thompson and Sarah Boyce, Washington, DC; and his grandchildren he loved so much; Kadin and Maija Fox; Kara and Josh Rogers; Caitlin Thompson; Conner Keiser.; sisters in law, Sandra Maki of Negaunee; Janice (John) Eman, Negaunee; Sharon Lampi, Gaines;and mother in law, Ali Maki, Negaunee.and nieces, nephews and cousins, He was preceeded in death by brothers, Donald Lampi and Gordon Lampi, and an infant sister, June.. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, March 16 at 1 pm at St.Anthony Catholic Church in Mackinaw City with Sister Chris Herald officiating. Visitation will be held from 11 to 1 pm at the church. Burial of his cremains will be in Negaunee at a later date.Memorials may be directed to the family for a memorial to be announced later, with envelopes available from Dodson Funeral Home, St.Ignace who assisted the family with arrangements.
