Maurits Eugene Vermeylen

Maurits "Mose" Vermeylen of Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan passed away peacefully with family by his side, on Sunday May 22, 2022 in the War Memorial Hospital. Maurits was born in 1939 in Schriek, Belgium to Gustaaf and Augusta (Mylemans). He was the youngest of 6 children and spent his childhood years in Belgium. He moved to Detroit as a young man and then to his home in rural Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan, where he spent the past 43 years. He worked for many years as a wood worker making beautiful wooden clocks. Mose had many interests and in particular he was interested in history and geography and always enjoyed his nightly Jeopardy show where he knew many of the answers! He was an accomplished 'bar-Trivia' competitor with his 'team' from the Sault, ranking #9 in the country at one point. Mose loved to travel and tell stories about his adventures. He traveled the world extensively accompanied by his good friends - Phil or Jon or with his cousin and friend, Bert. He also often accompanied Phil to Franciscan Chapter Reunions and to Rotary functions across the US. Mose loved nature and wildlife and had many camping experiences in North America and abroad. He especially loved to garden and his happiest times were spent gardening at his home and selling his produce at the Farmers' Markets. Maurits is predeceased by his parents, Gustaaf and Augusta and his siblings, Willy, Rene, Joseph, and Robert. He is survived by his loving sister, Yvonne, and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. He will be missed by his family and friends in USA, Canada, and Belgium. He will be dearly missed by his Canadian family, where he was like a father to Tammy (Heath) and Brian (Vera), a grandfather to Ethan (Bailey), Wesley (Hillary), Leah (Michael) and Julian and a great-grandfather to Waylon, Penny, June, and Wade. A Celebration of Life will be held at Rotary Park in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan on June 11, 2022 at 2:00 pm (in case of rain, second floor meeting room) and in Ontario this summer with his family there, where they will share stories and laughs with some good Belgian beer. Clark Hovie Galer Funeral Home assisted the family with arrangements.
