Michael Smith

Mike, 67, of Sault Sainte Marie died unexpectedly at his home on Thursday, January 24th in SSM. Mike was born February 11th, 1951. Mike was the superintendent at the Sault Country Club for almost 30 years, and helped in the 1980's reconstruction of the country club from its original 9 hole course to its 18 hole course that exists today. He was preceded in death by his parents William Smith and Helena Hoezle, as well as his grandmother Oma. He is survived by his brother, William Smith Jr., sister-in-law, Joanne Smith, and nephews Christopher, Timothy and Billy. He is also survived by his longtime companion, Mary Watchorn, her mother Gertrude Walkiewicz and surrogate children Katie and Jacob Watchorn. He recently became a surrogate grandfather of both Riley Watchorn and Marlena Sarda, and called them his "little princesses". Mike loved to play pool, golf, fish, and to stay abreast of current news. He was the jokester we all loved. He had many fun years of skiing and playing softball, accompanied by lots of great stories. The last few years he really enjoyed lying by the fire with his family, while playing board and card games. He also enjoyed watching the Detroit Lions and Red Wings play. He loved history. He would read just about any kind of historical book, watch countless documentaries and movies. Mike was a very smart and knowledgeable person that loved trivia. He really enjoyed reading the paper from cover-to-cover and took great pleasure in completing the daily crossword puzzles. He always brought smiles to peoples' faces and constantly made time to have quality conversations. He touched many lives within the community and went out of his way to help and take care of others. He always took great pride in all the work that he did, whether that was working at the golf course or at his home. Mary and Mike had a one of a kind relationship that was incredibly meaningful. They were partners and best friends that completed each other's lives. Mike also had a very close bond with his brother with whom he spoke on a daily basis. He will be missed more than words could ever express and by everyone that had the privilege of knowing him. Mike will always remain a legend to anyone that knew him... and that is the way he would have wanted it to be. Mike did not wish to have a public service, because he only wanted his friends and family to remember the happy memories they shared. The family was assisted by C.S.
