Paul H. Rodiger

Paul Herman Rodiger, age 79, of Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan passed away early Saturday morning, October 11, 2008 at War Memorial Hospital's Long Term Care Unit. Paul was born in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan on November 23, 1928, the son of the late Fred and Ada (Reich) Rodiger. After graduating from Sault High School, he joined the U.S. Army where he served during the Korean War building air strips. On April 10, 1954, he married Donna McDonald at the Central United Methodist Church. He worked for the Evening News as a printer, retiring in 1991 after 38 years of employment. Paul was a member of the Isaac Walton League. Paul was an avid sportsman who enjoyed to fish. Many days and most weekends he would be out in his fishing boat or out on the ice in the winter with his fishing partner, Donna. His daughter Traci also accompanied them on these fishing trips during her childhood years. He had a special knack for catching fish - even when no one else was getting any bites he would still be reeling them in. He was an excellent hunter of deer, ducks, geese, and partridge and took yearly fall trips out west to South Dakota hunting pheasants. He loved being outdoors and going on camping/fishing weekends and especially being out deep in the woods at the family deer hunting camp in Barbeau. Later in his life he loved to watch the deer and water foul rather than hunt them. He also enjoyed feeding and watching the song birds at his backyard bird feeders. He would still go on a daily four-mile walk with his dog, Bessie, up until last fall when his health would not allow him to anymore. Paul is survived by his wife: Donna Rodiger; a daughter: Traci (Jason) Klier of Sault Ste. Marie, MI, a sister: Fern (Cleve) Brown of Grand Rapids, MI, and a brother: Don (Sandy) Rodiger of Homosassa, FL. He is also survived by 6 nieces and 3 nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother: Bob Rodiger. A time of gathering will be held from 11:00 AM until 1:00 PM on Thursday, October 16, 2008 at C.S. Mulder Funeral Home. A memorial service will be held at 1:00 PM that same day at the funeral home with Pastor David Henderson officiating. Interment will be at Oaklawn Chapel Gardens. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be left to the Alzheimer's Foundation of America or War Memorial Hospital's Long Term Care Unit.
