Paul Stoling

Paul Stoling, age 100, of Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan passed away Saturday afternoon, July 16, 2016 at his home. Paul was born in Emporium, Pennsylvania on March 20, 1916, the son of the late Tony and Barbara (Smith) Stoling. In 1933, he moved to Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan. In November 1941, he married Helen Pontus in St. Ignace, Michigan. Paul joined the United States Army and served his country during World War II as a half track driver in the 705th Tank Destroyer Unit. He fought in the Siege of Bastogne and earned the rank of Sergeant. He received a Bronze Star, the Presidential Unit Citation, a Eastern Theater of Operations Campaign ribbon with four battle stars, and a Good Conduct Medal. Paul worked for the Northwestern Leather Company for over 24 years, as well as, his second job at Callaghan's Market. Later he started working for the Sault Area Schools as a Custodian, retiring in 1981. In addition, Paul also retired from the Army National Guard in 1976. He was a member of the VFW, the American Legion, and the Algonquin United Methodist Church. Paul enjoyed traveling, hunting, and fishing and did all three well into his nineties. He also enjoyed bowling and at the age of 90, he bowled a 200 at DonDee Lanes for his House of Bargains Team. Paul loved his family, being a grandparent and a great papa, and he loved his many friends. Paul loved his country and church. Paul has chosen now to leave his life on earth and join the true love of his life, his wife Helen. Paul is survived by three children: Paulette (Dennis) Nutter of Gig Harbor, WA, Leanna (Garry) Podolski of Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, and Randy (Carla) Stoling of Sault Ste. Marie, MI; four grandchildren: Adam Podolski, Lauren Podolski, Anastacia Stoling, and Jacob (Melanie) Stoling; and five great grandchildren: Anthony Talentino, Audric Rapson, Sorian Rapson, Aiyana Salveson, and Abigail Stoling. He also is survived by nephews Rob Pontus, Ron (Barb) Simon, Duane Loop, nieces Roxann (Don) Johnson, Roselyn (Kenneth) VanLuven, Rochelle (Reid) Perron, and his best friend Phil (Linda) Klier. Paul was preceded in death by his parents, his wife: Helen Stoling; two sisters: Madolyn Simon and Rose Loop; and a brother: Theodore Stoling. A memorial service celebrating his 100 years will be held at the Algonquin United Methodist Church on Friday, July 29, 2016 at 1:00 pm. A luncheon will follow. Memorials may be left to the Algonquin United Methodist Church or Hospice of the EUP.
