Philip Benedick

Philip Earl Benedick, age 92, of Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan passed away Tuesday morning, May 8, 2018, at the Hospice of the EUP - Hospice House. Philip was born on April 19, 1926, in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan to the late Herbert and Julia (Monroe) Benedick. He attended Sault High School before serving his country in the United States Army during World War II. He spent most of his time in the South Pacific on the island of Saipan preparing for an invasion of Japan that was never needed. Philip married Elma Laaksonen on December 24, 1947, at St John's Lutheran Church in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan. He was a life member of the VFW Post #3676 and worked for Consumers Power in Flint for 34 years. Philip was an ardent fan of the Soo Indians and later the Soo Eagles Hockey teams. Recently, when the Soo Eagles remodeled their locker room at the Pullar, they named it after Philip and Elma Benedick. He enjoyed traveling and going to Florida for the winter, as well as, watching hockey and football on TV. Philip will be sadly missed by family, friends, and the hockey community. Phil is survived by his wife: Elma Benedick; two sons: Steven (Theresa) Benedick of Suttons Bay, MI and Randy Benedick of Lake Ann, MI; and twin granddaughters: Nichole (Randy) Summerville of Chicago, IL and Rachel Benedick of Denver, CO. Philip is also survived by his sister: June Diehl of Columbiaville, MI; three brothers-in-law: Ray (Patricia) Laaksonen of Oscoda, MI and Will (Nora) Laaksonen of Onancock, VA, and Al (Robbie) Laaksonen of Ludington, MI: three sisters-in-law: Dea Augustson of Rudyard, MI, Irene Soderblom of Greenville, SC, and Velma (Jack) Langland of Cedar Spring, MI; and many nieces and nephews. Philip was preceded in death by his parents, three sisters: Shirley Somes, Ethel Dietz, and Audrey Benedick; a brother-in-law: Edward Laaksonen, and a sister-in-law: Bertha Dannenberg. According to Philip's wishes, cremation has taken place and no public services will be held. In lieu of flowers, memorial may be left to: Memorial Scholarship Fund, C/O Soo Eagles Hockey, P.O. Box 1432, Sault Ste. Marie, MI 49783 or Hospice of the EUP.
