Phyllis Gayle Agar

Phyllis Gayle Agar a lifelong resident of Sault Ste. Marie, MI passed away peacefully at War Memorial Hospital early Saturday morning August 16, 2014. She was born in Sault Ste. Marie, MI September 18, 1936 to John and Catherine (MacMillan) Atkins. Phyllis graduated from Sault High School in 1954. After graduating from high school she worked at Central Savings Bank. On August 31, 1957 she married Robert Agar at the First United Presbyterian Church. Phyllis and Bob owned Agar's Service station and Phyllis did the bookwork for the business. She was in the first class of correctional officers at the Kinross Correctional Facility. She earned an Associate Degree in Mental Health and a Bachelor of Science Degree in Sociology from Lake Superior State College. She was also awarded a Returning Student Award while at LSSC. Phyllis enjoyed snowmobiling, cross country skiing, bowling, sewing, travelling, Laker hockey, and playing cribbage in earlier years. She was actively involved in the Hiawatha Skating Club for many years. She faithfully drove her daughter, Cathy, to the ice rinks in Sault, MI and Sault, Ont. and spent many hours watching her skate as well as with her daughter Roberta with bowling and swimming lessons. She trained her dog "Patches" and entered her in obedience competitions where Patches earned several awards. Phyllis was active in the Falls City Rebekahs, the Senior Citizens Club, War Memorial Hospital Auxiliary, and the First United Presbyterian Church. She also enjoyed camping, riding in the golf cart, and was an avid Detroit Tiger fan. She is survived by her husband Bob of almost 57 years, daughters Catherine Agar (fiance' Rob Ware) and Roberta (Ross) Shubert of Sault Ste. Marie, MI; three beloved granddaughters: Sarah Shubert (fiance' Brad Faliks) of Mineola, New York, Katie Shubert (fiance' Drew Otto) of Sault Ste. Marie, MI and Aubrey Agar of Sault Ste. Marie, MI; great granddaughter Madison Otto and great grandchild Baby Otto due in February. She is also survived by her sister and brother-in-law Patricia (O.A. Kenneth) Fisher and niece Elizabeth Fisher of Englewood, CO. She was predeceased by her parents and her sister-in-law Lillis Agar McGahey. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be left to the First United Presbyterian Church Memorial Fund, 555 Bingham Ave., Sault Ste. Marie, MI 49783. No public services will be held.
