Shelby Joy Gibbons

Shelby Joy Gibbons, age 81, of Drummond Island, Michigan, passed away, on July 19, 2018 in Petoskey, Michigan. She was born on March 20, 1937 on Drummond Island, to Halley and Dorothy (Bailey) MacDonald. Shelby grew up in Detour, Michigan and graduated from Detour High School in 1955. After High School Shelby met Thomas Arthur Gibbons of Drummond Island, and on May 18, 1957 they were married at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Detour. It was on Drummond where they settled and raised their three children. For the first years of their marriage, Shelby worked as a waitress at Hilka’s restaurant, then as a housekeeper for the Bailey’s, owners of the Yacht Haven on Drummond. After several years as a house keeper Shelby was employed at Domino’s Lodge where she showed her talents in laying out their Golf Pro Shop. After eight years at the lodge she started her own craft and gift shop “Shelby’s Almost Amish”. Shelby was a member of the St. Florence Catholic Church Guild on Drummond Island and the Drummond Island Homemakers Association. Shelby loved baking and cooking, not just for her own family but for everyone. She enjoyed crafts, painting, and made homemade gift cards that she sold in her shop. Shelby is survived by her children, Thomas (Barb) Gibbons of Allendale, Michigan, Hallie (Gary) Kott of Raber, Michigan, and Jody (Sue) Gibbons of Drummond Island; grandchildren, Dustin (Jaime) Gibbons, Garrett (Christina) Gibbons, Erin (Kurt) Cornwell, Gary (Holly) Kott, Craig Gibbons, Brandon & Nicole Melcer, and Bradley Wirgau; great-grandchildren, Haley, Kurty, Michael, Cambree, Barrette, Leaunna; brother, Michael (Lisa) MacDonald of Drummond Island; sisters, Catherine Brady of Detour, Molly (John) Thompson of Hessel and Muriel (Bob) Sharpe of Flint; sister-in-law, Charlene McDonald of Sault Ste. Marie, several nieces and nephews, and best friend Barbara Rice. Shelby is preceded in death by her husband, Tom Gibbons; parents; brother, Halley MacDonald; sister, Cheri Keller; and brother-in-law, Cliff Brady. Visitation will be held on July 23, 2018 from 5:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M at the Drummond Island Township Hall. Mass of Christian Burial will be held on July 24, 2018 at 11:00 A.M. at St. Florence Catholic Church on Drummond Island. Father Jose Cherian will be Celebrant. Burial will follow at Drummond Island Cemetery.
