Steven Joseph Cannello

Steven Joseph Cannello, age 71, of Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan, died on July 25, 2026, at Ball Hospice House in Sault Ste. Marie. He was born July 13, 1955, in Sault Ste. Marie, to Frank and Theresa (Lalonde) Cannello. Steven grew up in Sault Ste. Marie and graduated from Sault Area High School with the class of 1973. After graduation, he attended Michigan State University, where he earned his bachelor's degree in 1977. He then continued his education at Wayne State University, earning his law degree in 1980. Following law school, Steven returned to his hometown and began practicing law with The Moher Firm. Before long Steven became a partner, establishing the law firm of Moher & Cannello, P.C. Steven dedicated the next forty years to serving his clients and community with integrity, respect and compassion before retiring in 2020. Steven served as the attorney for the City of Sault Ste Marie for over thirty years and was instrumental in the formation of Old Mission Bank wherein, with time, he became Chairperson of the Board of Directors. Steven volunteered his time and expertise in support of his community by his service on multiple boards and committees. During his years practicing law, Steven met the love of his life, Debbie Colbert, who was working as a court reporter at the time. Together they built a beautiful life, sharing forty-six wonderful years filled with love, laughter, and unwavering devotion. In his free time, Steven enjoyed playing pool, hunting, and fishing. He was also an avid sports fan, faithfully cheering on the Los Angeles Dodgers and especially admired Shohei Ohtani. Most of all, Steven cherished the time he spent with Debbie, his family, and the many friends whose lives he touched throughout the years. Steven was a faithful member of St. Mary's Procathedral Catholic Church. Steven is survived by his life partner, Debbie Colbert; son, Justin (April) Hollen of Indianapolis, Indiana; grandchildren, Sheldon Cashman, Elizabeth Cashman, and Mara Hollen; sisters, Mary Ann (Isabel Yennes) Cannello of Sault Ste. Marie and Amy (Nicholas) Cannello-Boring of Rochester Hills, Michigan; and a host of beloved cousins from the Cardellino, Rogers, Cannello, Miron, and LaLonde clans. Steven is preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Theresa, paternal grandparents, Joseph and Ircelia (Cardellino) Cannello and maternal grandparents, Leon and Marie (Miron) LaLonde as well as many loving aunts and uncles. Visitation will be held on Friday, July 31, 2026, from 10:00 AM to 12:00 Noon, at St. Mary’s Procathedral Catholic Church, 377 Maple St., Sault Ste. Marie, MI 49783. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow beginning at 12:00 Noon with Fr. Allen Mott as celebrant. Steven’s final resting place will be at Riverside Cemetery in Sault Ste. Marie. In lieu of flowers the family requests that Memorial contributions in Steven’s honor be made to Curtis Wilson Primary School and Academy, 7850 S.
