Susie Martin

Beloved wife, mother, grandmother, aunt and friend, Susie Martin, age 66 of Cedarville, Michigan, passed away on January 26, 2019, in Grand Rapids, Michigan. She was born on July 27, 1952, in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan, to Earl Jay and Nona Marie (Hartman) Duncan. Susie was raised in Cedarville where she graduated from Cedarville High School in 1970. She went on to attend Lake Superior State College for three years before purchasing the local favorite Doghouse Restaurant from her brother John in 1977. On May 16, 1981, she married her loving husband James “Jim” Henry Martin. They continued to live and raise their family in Cedarville while running the restaurant until 1997. Many will remember Susie from her years delivering newspapers for the Sault Evening News. She and her family delivered the news until her retirement in 2016. Among her life’s greatest joys was the birth of her granddaughters, Ruby and Nora two years ago. Affectionately known as “Mumma Suz” she loved to spoil and snuggle the girls. Susie was a devoted member of the Les Cheneaux Christian Fellowship in Cedarville, where she served as both the church secretary and the hospitality director. She was a very thoughtful person and was often the organizer of preparing and delivering meals to those in need throughout the community. She would never let anyone go hungry. Susie is survived by her husband, Jim Martin; son, Duncan J. (Kathy) Martin and granddaughters, Ruby and Nora; daughter, Maria (Damian Byrd) Martin; nieces and nephews, Tami, Kurt, and David Duncan, and their families; and sister-in-law, Carol Duncan. All of whom reside in Cedarville. Susie is preceded in death by her parents; and brother, John Duncan. Visitation will be held on Saturday, February 2, 2019. Family is welcome at 10:00 am with visitation from 11:00 A.M. to 2:00 P.M. at the Les Cheneaux Fellowship in Cedarville. The Funeral Service will follow at 2:00 P.M. Friends and family are encouraged to stay for celebration and a meal following the service. Burial will be at Cedar Cemetery in Cedarville, in the spring.
