Elva M. Nelson

Elva M. Nelson, 92 of St.Ignace passed away Wednesday evening, July 20 at Mackinac Straits Hospital following a short illness while living at Cedar Cove in Cedarville.where she was a resident a few days following a fall at her home on Truckey Street. Evla was born in St.Ignace on March 14,1919 to Julius and Yarda (Sorenson) Nordstrom. She was a life resident of St.Ignace and a life member of the Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church, teaching Sunday School and helping with every ladies activity in the church, and was the oldest living member. She was most proud of her involvement in the Lutheran Church. She graduated from high school in 1937, and attended beauly school in Traverse City. She married Loren E. Nelson on March 30,1941. They built thier home on Truckey street and raised a family of 3. In more recent years they spent winters in Florida, first at Bradenton and then the past 19 years in Naples. She was a fantastic baker, always making breads, rolls, cookies, and pies. She loved to play cards, and belonged to. the Bridge Club, and also had something special for each time the ladies were at her house in the form of baked goods. She loved ot cook dinner for her friends and family, and as her family lamented, Sunday was church day, and then came home for a great dinner. She was a generous and devoted mother, and will be missed greatly by all who knew her. Thursday was a time for, eating out with friends and family. She always had a smile and was most gracious to all who knew her. She was a life member of the Order of Eastern Stars in St.Ignace. She also was an active member of the Friday Couples Golf League. She is survived by a son, Paul and Brenda Nelson, SanDiego,CA; daughters, Julie and Jack Frost, Garden Grove,CA; and Lana and Greg Cheeseman, St.Ignace; grandchildren, Kristen, Kirk, Heather, Douglas, Greg and Nicole; and great grandchildren, Lauren, Shelby, Jack and Addison. sister in law, Edwina Nordstrom, and Marion Nelson; both of St.Ignace and brother and sister in law, Nels "Bob" and Rose Nelson,St.Ignace. She was preceeded in death by her husband, Loren on February 28,2004; brother, Everett Nordstrom, and sister, Vera Marshall. Funeral services were held on Saturday, July 23 at Zion Lutheran Church at 11 am with Pastor Jeremy Winter officiating. Visitation was from 9 to 11 am. Special music was played by Billy Milford, a close friend of Elva. Burial was in Lakeside Cemetery. Pallbearers were Greg Cheeseman, Jr, Jim Nelson, Jerry Lee, and Tucker Thomas. Memorials may be directed to the Zion Lutheran Church or the Mackinac Straits Hospital with envelopes available from Dodson Funeral Home who assisted with arrangements.
