Thelma Wood Rogers

Thelma Rogers, age 81, of Cedarville, Michigan, died March 18, 2016, at home. She was born February 16, 1935, in South Halifax, England, to Harry Wood and Florence Parks Wood. Thelma grew up in England where you finished school at age 16. At that time she sang opera in the “Pirates of Penzance”. She had scarlet fever and tuberculosis and survived them both. Thelma entered the English Royal Air Force and served for three years until she met her Ameri-can soldier, married, immigrated to the United States, and became a U.S. citizen. Thelma fos-tered many children who still think of her fondly. She grew up during the depression and so she always had a stocked pantry. No one she knew would ever be hungry. She would feed them and then send them home with more food. Thelma was very thrifty and could stretch a dollar to make it seem like ten. She was a strong woman who passed that onto her children and the oth-ers who called her mom, which were most of the children she ever knew. Thelma was a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagels for over 50 years and held many offices in the organization. Thelma spent her entire life taking care of others. As a “foreigner”, she traveled the United States with wide eyes, living many places, and giving help to those in need. She always had comforting words for everyone. In her final years, she wanted only three things: chocolate to eat, beer to drink, and a Cabana Boy to watch. She will be greatly missed! Thelma is survived by her children, Melodie (Dale) Griffin of Cedarville, Morris (Brenda) Strong of Flint, Michigan, and Lorna (Starr Jensen) Snyder of Green Bay, Wisconsin; step daughter, Ginny Langrick of Powers, Michigan; grandchildren, Linda (Don) Cantrell, Shantelle (Theodore) Gough, Michelle (Josh) Fultz, Heather (Mike) Perkins, Melissa (Jim) Hancock, Jacob, Hope, Tyler, Jeshua, and Maddie Jo Snyder, Deanna Holmes, Tina Thalmam, and Fran Roberts; and great grandchildren, Michael and Jacob Perkins, Kassidy and Tessa Gough, Meadow Fultz, and Mathew and Marcus Snyder. She is also survived by siblings, Barbara (David) Slender of Nabucca Head, Australia, Landon (Betty) Wood of Rothsville, Pennsylvania, and Lorna (Derek) Severn of Alfred Cove, Australia. Thelma was preceded in death by her husbands, Morris Strong and Joe Rogers; son, Cliff Hunt-ley, and great granddaughter, Willow Spring Fultz. A private memorial service will be held this summer. Interment will be in Cedar Cemetery in Cedarville.
