Verna C. Bailey

Verna C. (Anderson) Bailey, age 92, of Drummond Island, Michigan, passed away peacefully on March 3, 2019 at War Memorial Hospital in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan. She was born on November 11, 1926 in Rosedale, Michigan, to Rosswell Jones and Jeannette Lillian (Strickland) Anderson. Verna grew up on Drummond Island and graduated from Sault Area High School. She then attended Sault Beauty Academy. She married Robbins “Bob” Bailey on June 21, 1947, on Drummond Island. They lived on Drummond Island before moving to Flint, Michigan, where they raised their family and Verna spent over 20 years teaching life skills to clients at a Vocational Independence Program in Flint. She also attended Mott Community College for a couple of years, studying psychology and geriatric care. For many years, Verna and Bob came to their A-frame cabin on the south shore of Drummond Island before retiring to the island permanently in 1988. Verna and Bob joined the Drummond Island Lutheran Church and various other organizations on the island. Verna was a talented crafter, gifting many family and friends with knitted sweaters, slippers, mittens, and crocheted snowflake ornaments throughout the years. Verna is survived by her husband Bob; daughter, Janice (Bob) Newell; son-in-law Marshall Bailey all of Drummond Island; son, Frank (Linda) Bailey of Racine, Wisconsin; grandchildren, Robert (Vanessa) Newell Jr., Debbie (Jeff) Roberts, Matthew Bailey, Timothy (Kayla) Bailey, David (Zsanelle) Bailey; great-grandchildren Anna, Luke, Emma, and Jenna Roberts and a new great-grandchild Bailey due in August. Also surviving are her sisters, Dorothy Bertram of Brimley, Michigan, Helen Connolly of Grand Rapids, Michigan, and Ivalene Woehl of Holiday, Florida; brother-in-law, Warren (Mickey) Bailey of Stanwood, Michigan; and many nieces and nephews. Verna was preceded in death by her daughters, Jeannine Bailey and Jolene Hine; son-in-law, Michael Hine; and daughter-in-law, Terrie Bailey; brothers, Vern Anderson, Cecil Anderson; and sister, Betty Bailey; brothers-in-law, Francis (Jane) Bailey and Blaine (Elaine) Bailey; sisters-in-law, Helen Todzy and Cornelia Bias. A Memorial Gathering will be held on Monday, June 17, 2019 from 11:00 A.M. to 12:00 Noon at the Drummond Island Lutheran Church on Drummond Island with the Memorial Service to follow at 12:00 Noon. Interment will be at Drummond Island Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Drummond Island Ambulance Corps, P.O.
