Verna Osterhout

Verna Mae Osterhout, age 89 of Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan passed away May 10, 2021. Verna was born on July 1, 1931, in Dafter, Michigan to Andrew and Sarah (Kibble) Lawrence. She was a graduate of Brimley High School with the class of 1950. She married Raymond Osterhout on June 25, 1955 at St. Mary's Pro-Cathedral. She and Raymond were life-long residents of Sault Ste. Marie where they raised their four children. Ray and Verna enjoyed nightly drives, listening to country music, and traveling. Verna worked for many years at Sault Area Schools as a paraprofessional, assisting children with special needs. She was a member of the Gazelles Lodge #552. Verna adored her family and loved having family gatherings. She was a very warm-hearted woman and delighted in all children. She was known for her quick wit and beautiful blue eyes. Verna is survived by her children: Steven (Mary) Osterhout of Ormond Beach, FL, Scott (Cindy) Osterhout of Dafter, Burch Osterhout of Brimley, and Brenda (David) Cox of Sault Ste. Marie; eightgrandchildren: Carley Osterhout Jones, Sara Osterhout (Zack) VanGinhoven, Christopher (Angie) Elander, Chad (Corey) Osterhout, Christopher (Nicole) Osterhout, Michael Osterhout, Samuel Cox, Reilly Cox, and 9 great-grandchildren: Alissa Jones, Julia Rae Osterhout, Benjamin VanGinhoven, Ethan and Lauren Elander, Chloe, Oliver, Zander, and Max Osterhout; very special nephew and nieces who spent much time in their early years and numerous summer vacations with their Aunt Verna: David (Mary Kay) Wickenheiser, Wanda (John) Lynn, and Karen Dietrich. She is also survived by many other nieces and nephews. Verna was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 54 years, Raymond; two brothers: Clayton and Wilmer "Slim" Lawrence; and a sister: Freda Wickenheiser. Visitation will begin at 12:30 PM on Wednesday, May 19, 2021, at C.S. Mulder Funeral Home. The funeral service will begin at 1:30 PM. Burial will be at Oaklawn Chapel Gardens. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be left in Verna's name to Hearthside Assisted Living's Activities Fund, 1501 W. 6th Ave., Sault Ste. Marie, MI 49783.
