Clara Jones

Clara Jones, age 96, of Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan, passed away at her home on July 29, 2011, of pancreatic cancer. She was born in the Sault on February 4, 1915, to Archibald and Clara (Latey) Spence, the first child born in this country after the family emigrated from Leicester, England. Her family will miss her quick wit and endless energy. Clara graduated from Sault High in 1933. She worked as manager of the Tasty Freeze and salesperson at Montgomery Ward while raising three sons. She married Charles Jones in 1960. Charles was transferred to Belpre, Ohio through his job at the Carbide where they lived for fourteen years and she worked as a waitress, but as soon as he retired they eagerly returned to the Sault to be near family. Clara then worked at Bell''s Tourist Shops until she retired at the age of 79 to care for her ill husband. She enjoyed Thursdays at the bingo and Saturdays at garage sales. Until her illness, she scrubbed her floors on her hands and knees every Friday and wore high heels everywhere she went. Her family and friends will remember her for her snappy comebacks. She always had a joke or an interesting story to tell, and she loved nothing more than being with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren at family gatherings and sporting events. Surviving are her sons Peter (Evelyn) Bush of the Sault, Kenneth (Topper) Bush of Hawthorne, CA, and Patrick (Carol) Bush of Raleigh, NC; her sister Elsie Didado and brother Paul Spence of California, brother Sonny Spence of Holland, MI, and brother-in-law John Lackey of the Sault; grandchildren Terri Bush, Pam (Tim) Pride, Susy (Tim) Talentino, Diana (Randy) Kennedy all of the Sault, Pete (Beckie) Bush of Belmont, MI, Pat (Miriam) Bush, Brenda (Jesse) Campos, Brad Bush of California, and Kim Bush of North Carolina; and sixteen great-grandchildren. Preceding her in death are her husband Charles Jones and her sisters Vera Spence, Zena Fitzgerald, Edith (Tony) Berardi, and Laura Lackey. Visitation will be 3:00pm until 7:00pm on Tuesday August 2, 2011 at Clark Bailey Newhouse Funeral Home. Funeral Services will be 11:00am Wednesday August 3, 2011 at Clark Bailey Newhouse Funeral Home with Deacon Bill Piche officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Clara''s memory to Hospice of the E.U.P.
