Floyd Leroy Colvin

Floyd Leroy "Chief" Colvin, age 78, of Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan passed away Friday, October 13, 2017, at McLaren Northern Michigan Hospital. Floyd was born on July 9, 1939, in Bridge Creek, WI to the late Vernon and Hazel (Hein) Colvin. He married Lois Teresa O'Connor at Holy Family Church in Barbeau on October 6, 1962. He served his country in the United States Navy from 1956-1960 on the USS-LSD Monticello in Santiago, CA. Later he served in the U.S. Coast Guard from 1962 -1980 retiring as a Chief Boatswains Mate. During his time in the Coast Guard, he served as officer in charge of: USCGC Tamarack - Sault Ste. Marie, MI, Cox'n 40' Life Boat - Station Sault Ste. Marie, MI, Detour Light - Detour, MI, USCGC Naugatuck - Sault Ste. Marie, MI Ambrose Tower - New York USCGC Mariposa - Detroit, MI USCGC Sweetbrier - Cordova, AK He was a member of the Chief Petty Officer Association. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, trapping, and talking with old shipmates. His true passions were the Coast Guard and raising his family. Floyd was a very loyal man and loyal to the Coast Guard and his family- Floyd was very proud of all his family and children. He was a great role model to all and everyone that knew him. Floyd took great pride in his Military Career serving in the Coast Guard and was respected by all. He was a great father to his children and grandchildren. Floyd was a very generous and giving man and he will be missed greatly. Floyd will always live on through his children and grandchildren and wife that loved him very much. Floyd is survived by his wife: Lois Colvin; his five children: Daniel (Janice) Colvin of Sault Ste. Marie, MI, James Colvin of Dafter, MI, Steven Colvin of Sault Ste. Marie, MI, Joseph (Heather) Colvin of Troup, TX, and Teresa Colvin of Sault Ste. Marie, MI; seven grandchildren: Emilee, Mary Katherine, Stephanie, Drake, Morgan, Thomas and Megan; and four great-grandchildren: Braylan, Silas, Ilah and Brysen. He is also survived by two brothers: John (Kathy) Colvin and Ron Colvin; four sisters: Barb (George) Studley, Carol Gleason, Cathy Freeman, and Shirley Brock; several nieces and nephews and several great-nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father: Vernon Colvin; his mother: Hazel (Hein) Brock: his step-father: Mark Brock; a brother-in-law: Mike Gleason; and two nephews: Pat and David Gleason. A funeral Mass will be held at 1:00 PM on Tuesday, October 24, 2017, at Holy Family Church with Brother John Hascall as celebrant. Friends may call at the church from 11:00 AM until the time of the service. Burial will be at Holy Family Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be left to Holy Family Church.
