James Robert Campbell

James Robert Campbell 79 of Carp River passed away Thursday afternoon, June 19 at EUP Hospice House in the Soo. He was born in St.Ignace on August 14,1934 to James A. and Hazel (Walker) Campbell. He graduated from LaSalle High School in 1953 amd married Shirley Johnston on September 19,1953 at Zion Lutheran Church in St.Ignace. They made their home in St.Ignace many years, and Jim worked for Michigan Bell from 1955 to retirement in December 1988. He then traveled many states including Hawaii doing instalations and switching telephone systems working for NorTel. He was part of the team that switched St.Ignace , Mackinac Island and the eastern UP from operator to dial system in 1974. He also worked on the Mackinac Bridge during construction in his early years, and was an electrician. Jim served 2 terms as a Citry Councilman in St.Ignace; was a former Moose Member; and served on the church council at Zion Lutheran Church many years, and was a life member. He was known as being very fair on the city council, listening to all people before making decisions that effected the lives of the taxpayer. He was a wonderful husband, father and grandfather. He will be missed by all who knew him. He is survived by his wife, Shirley; 4 sons, Robert (Tish) Campbell, Ishpeming; Mick (Tracey) Campbell, Mackinaw City; Bill and Steve Campbell, Carp River; 2 daughters, Kim ( Dan) DiLoreto, Harvey; Candy Campbell, Carp River; 1 sister, Sandy Campbell-Litzner, Allenville; grandchildren, Cassy, Terri, Sam,Jack,Ashley, Amber , Brianna;, Jimmy, Joey, Jenny and Jennifer; great grandchlldren, Willow and Taylen, and several nieces, Nephews, and in laws. He was preceeded in death by his parents and 4 siblings who died at early an early age. Friends may call at Zion Lutheran Church on Tuesday, June 24 from 10 to 11 am when services wil be held with Pastors Jeremy Winter and Breanne Johnson officiating. A luncheon will be served after services at the church. Burial will be later in Carp River Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to either Zion Lutheran Church or the Hospice of the EUP with envelopes available from Dodson Funeral Home who assisted with arrangements.
