Marvin Frank Kurkierewicz

Marvin Frank Kurkierewicz, age 73, of Drummond Island, Michigan, died on Tuesday, October 21, 2014 in Petoskey, Michigan. He was born on January 25, 1941 in Bismark Township of Presque Isle County, Michigan, to Peter and Arline (Marquardt) Kurkierewicz. Marvin lived most of his childhood on Drummond Island. After his mother died, when Marvin was 12, he was raised by Cecil and Barbara Anderson. He lived with them until he was drafted into the U. S. Army where he served three years and earned his GED. Upon his return to Drummond Island, he married Barbara Ann Richwine on February 23, 1963. Marvin then returned to the service, entering the U.S. Coast Guard for 17 years. His first tour with the Coast Guard found him spending the summers on the lighthouse at Detour, Michigan. Over the years, he and Barbara were stationed in many places including Hawaii, Vietnam, Hong Kong, and Guam as they raised their daughters. After retiring from the Coast Guard to Charlevoix Michigan, Marvin worked as a security guard for the nuclear power plant and was a maintenance caretaker for local cottages. He retired and they returned to Drummond Island in 2006. While in Charlevoix, Marvin was a member of the Charlevoix Rod & Gun Club. He was an avid hunter and loved being at the “Deer Camp” with his family and friends. Marvin took great pride in vegetable gardening, and making maple syrup and a variety of jams. He enjoyed watching the hummingbirds. He was a man who wasn’t afraid “to tell it, like it was”. Marvin is survived by his wife, Barbara Ann Kurkierewicz of Drummond Island; four daughters, Karlene (Michael) Houtz of Harbor Springs, Michigan, Janet (Jon) Hyatt of Charlevoix, Michigan, Billie (Craig) Wagner of East Jordan, Michigan, and Kimberly (Brian) Watros of Cheboygan, Michigan; grandchildren, Ryan, Melissa, Adam, Morgan, Shelbee, Baylei, Brendan, Zachary, Tristan, Micaela, Kirstin, and Samantha; great-grandchildren, Zanthe and Zaphyra; brothers, Jacob “Jim” (Tommie) Kurkierewicz of Roseville, Michigan, Ernie (Deloras) Kurkierewicz of Alpena, Michigan, and Rob (Joyce) Anderson of Drummond Island; sisters, Verna (Emory) Olmstead of DeTour Village, Michigan, Mildred Boynton of Holt, Michigan, Janet (Tim) Garant of Rogers City, Michigan, Marilyn (Greg) McGuire of DeTour Village, Marlene (Steve) Groh of Drummond Island, Mary (Guy) Goudreau of Drummond Island, and Glenda (Jerry) King of Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan; sister-in-law, June Kurkierewicz of Drummond Island; and the father who raised him, Cecil Anderson of Drummond Island. Marvin was preceded in death by his mother; his mother who raised him, Barbara Anderson; daughter, Amy Kurkierewicz; brothers, David, Edmond, and Leonard; and sisters, Leona and Martha. A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, October 25, 2014 at 12:00 P.M. at the Drummond Island Township Hall. Gathering will start at 11:00 A.M. Inurnment will be at Drummond Island Cemetery.
