Romy P. Castillo

Romy P. Castillo, age 73, of Rudyard, Michigan, died June 22, 2014 in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan. He was born October 28, 1940 in Kawit, Cavite, Philippines to Monico and Ramona (Pale) Castillo and was named Gaudioso Pale Castillo at birth. Romy grew up in Kawit then joined the United States Coast Guard. He was stationed in San Diego, Puerto Rico, and then Maine where he met Karen Cecilia Schirmer. They were married September 5, 1964, in Rockland, Maine. He was stationed in Maine and Cape Cod, Massachusetts until his retirement in 1980. Romy and Karen moved to the Philippines for 3 ½ years while he completed his Bachelor Degree at Lockson College. They moved from the Philippines to Detroit and then in 1989, made Rudyard their home. Romy owned and operated Odds & Ends Pizza in Rudyard for several years. He was known for his eleven pound pizza. Romy was a member of the Masonic Lodge in the Philippines and the Catholic Church. He enjoyed gardening and cooking, especially pizza and Korean fried chicken. Romy is survived by his wife, Karen; children, James Searles of Tampa, Florida, Lee Ann Vigilotti of Cape Cod, Massachusetts, Matthew (Donnie) Searles, Sr. of Kincheloe, Michigan, Mark (Sheila) Searles of Cape Cod, Rosilinda (Dale Jr.) MacDowell of Rudyard, and Zyra Castillo of Grand Rapids, Michigan; grandchildren, Kelly Searles, Dee Dee Searles, April Vigiliotti, Matthew Searles Jr., Christina Searles, Heather Searles, Trinity Searles, Jonathan Searles, Richard Searles, Amanda MacDowell, Billy (Amanda) Gregg, Jason Gregg, and Kasey Gregg; and great grandchildren, Jada, Candace, Kaden, Matthew III, Kaylee, Roman, Katoni, Meia, Dominic Robert, Dominic, Robin, Aiden, Christopher, Dylan, and Kelli. He is also survived by five brothers, Bert Castillo of Philippines, Noel (Emma) Castillo of San Diego, Dany Castillo of Phoenix, Arizona, Joe Castillo of San Diego, and Mario (Jen) Castillo of Phoenix; sister, Annie (Phil) Torrea of Phoenix; and sisters-in-law, Marlene Heebsh and Elissa Locke. Romy was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Magdalina; and brother-in-law, Bill Heebsh. A gathering to celebrate Romy's life will be held Saturday, July 19 at the Rudyard Township Hall Community Room from 1:00 P.M. until 5:00 P.M.
