Vernon C. VanSloten

Vernon Calvin VanSloten, age 92, a lifelong resident of Rudyard, Michigan, died peacefully February 29, 2016, surrounded by family. Vern was born December 5, 1923 in Rudyard to Jake and Cora (DeWitt) VanSloten. After serving in the Navy during WWII Vern returned home and married Marion Postma on November 28, 1948. Vern was a dairy farmer for many years. In 1979, he became part owner of Northern Sand and Gravel where he worked until he retired in 1988. Vern was a member of the Rudyard Christian Reformed Church, The Antique Tractor Association, and served on many local and county boards. A true farmer at heart, Vern was always known to take the long way home so he could check the local fields and crops. He enjoyed collecting antique tractors and tinkering in his shop. He was always fixing something or working on his next invention, some were successful, some were not. Vern also enjoyed and loved his many grandchildren and great grandchildren. Vern is survived by four sons, Bernie (Chris) VanSloten, Ray (Sue) VanSloten, Jerry (Marsha) VanSloten, and Allan (Kathleen) VanSloten, all of Rudyard; three daughters, Jane (Marty) Eckardt of Rudyard, Gladys (Ken) Norris of Sault Ste. Marie, and Lynn Wallis of Rudyard; grandchildren, Ron (Andrea) VanSloten, Pat (Michelle) VanSloten, David (Jill) VanSloten, Brian VanSloten, Laurie (Scott) Morley, Aimee (Luke) Rice, Michael VanSloten, Christie (Keith) Tremblay, Jody (Chad) Smith, Jamie Kamper, Jennifer (Kevin) Laundy, Michelle Grove, Melissa (Jerry) Pancheri, Kevin (Abbie) VanSloten, Lindsey (Dane) Wallis, Kyle (Lindsey) VanSloten, Dana (John) Rogers, Craig Wallis and Leah Wallis; great-grandchildren, Brady, Bailey, Brett, Cora, Erika, Nathan, Max, Nick, Mav, Nash, Haley, Lilly, Jamus, Braden, Mya, Danika, Owen, Joel, Raya, J.R., Taylor, Terin, Tori, Gannon, Tristin, Jarrett, Maddie, Macy, Kaden, Rileigh, Hunter, Seth, Jarrett, Noah, Lukas, Kallan, Aubree, Quinn, and Emmett; brother, Floyd VanSloten of Rudyard; sisters, Mildred (Lester) DeJonge, Wilma Decker, and Buelah (James) Beacom all of Florida; brother-in-law, Bill Postma of California. Vern was preceded in death by his wife Marion; sisters, Laura Postma and Evelyn VanSloten; brother, Dennis VanSloten; brother-in-law, Albert Decker; and sister-in-law, Johanna Vansloten. Services will be held on Saturday, March 5, 1:00 p.m.at the Rudyard Christian Reformed Church with Rod Case officiating. The family will receive friends at the church from 11a.m to 1 p.m. Burial will be at North Rudyard Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Rudyard Christian School.
